Weeks 3/4 - Australian Open - Melbourne, Australia - Hard

Well done Evo!

Must say I was chuntering to myself when he went 6-3 down (with two mini breaks) in 1st set tie break. At that point I could see Evo going down in straights. But then he goes and wins four points in a row, and having missed a set point on his own serve at 8-7, finally took set point on Bagnis' serve to take breaker 10-8.

That 1st set tie break turned out to be as pivotal as it looked at the time, Evo cruising thru from there.

Really can't wait to see him up against Cilic, classic nothing to lose tie. Will be great to see how his game matches up there. My fear is that Cilic serve will be too strong for Evo to get in to rallies. I back him to trouble anyone once he is past the 2nd shot in the rally, but big servers dont feel like they'll be his forte, though I hope I'm wrong.

Also really hope it's not on so early that I can't see it. I'd be willing to be up at 5.30ish for it, but any earlier than that's a no-go for me.

I am sure Aljaz will be disappointed after what has been quite a strong start to the year reaching the QF in Chennai. Delighted for Evo. Had my doubts on this one, purely because of exertions last week and not having much time to prepare.

Andy is .... well .... Andy. I would expect nothing less.

Not a Brit, but I see young Alex de Minaur, in the draw on a WC, has dumped out Gerard Melzer (WR 87) in 5 sets. It will be interesting to see how a 17 year old can recover from a 5 setter and perform in the next round v Sam Querrey. The fact the the young Aussie is based just up the road from me in Alicante, gives me some added interest in his progress.

Fab result again from Evo and he's becoming a great watch.. He really does seem to have found core belief and its bringing out his talent. I just caught the first set tie break before running out the house, tremendous. Bagnis was still making mistakes at this point and crucially he missed a short shot at the net, just out. Don't think Evo looked back after this did he..

He always has been a great watch, for numerous reasons but mostly to be for his tennis.

It's obviously finally clicked with him. He has so much talent that if he can showcase it all week in week out and stay fit the next 4-5 years of his career are going to be played ata different level to the first 4-5!

Good to see him make his opponent miss purely through his willingness to chase down everything, and in contrast to many of the shorter ball chasers his technique is and always has been a thing of beauty. Head defenitely right today despite the miles he covered in reaching his first 250 final.

Big hitters definitely seem to be Evo's kryptonite. Will be interesting to see how he fares against Cilic.

Murray could potentially be facing two of the sport's top prospects in successive matches. Rublev is a big banana skin, and De Minaur could be an interesting potential third round encounter.

So pleased to see Dan back up last weeks run with a win here. Wasn't a given by any means considering the exertions of 14 sets in Sydney. I fear Cilic will probably have too much power BUT if he has an off day and Dan can nick the 1st set it could be interesting.

Cilic went to 5 in the heat. If Evo can return well and stay in the point, you never know! A win will finally get him into the top 50.

Isn't Cilic one of those ones that often goes '5' ?  So he's pretty used to it.

Although it was a shame to see Aljaz lose last night I felt happy for Victor as he wee celebratory shout showed how much it meant to him. He was 33 before he even made a grand slam main draw and his first win in Australia too. Always good to see guys my age winning as well. Come on Radek and co as well
