RE: Katie Swan

Katie doesn't seem to be entered into anything in January - any ideas if she's playing Aus Juniors?

No - she has already confirmed she has a training block in January and is expected to be asked as part of the Fed Cup squad in February. So I wouldn't expect any entries until after then.

And now she's playing for us on Thursday too. The youngest woman ever, taking over Anne's record.

Katie has officially confirmed that she has turned pro. Good luck in what I'm sure will be a very successful tennis career.

Sounds a little bit less American than in the last interview I saw with her.

Interesting interview. I haven't seen her in that forum before, she seemed quite nervous, bless her. It must be pretty hard for a teenager to come suddenly into the limelight and have to say the right things or be judged by the world. I do feel for her. Saying that, I thought she did well and had her head screwed on right.

For a player just turned pro, she doesn't seem to be playing much - withdrawn from Wirral, Switzerland, Mexico.... Will probably play juniors next in China.

I don't think there's any rush, if Katie's not 100% fit/ready, no reason to push it, that expression its a marathon not a sprint comes to mind.

Yes, she does seem to be being pretty well managed.

Great if she was playing more regularly and moving up the rankings and I'd be among the first to be being a statto about her relative progress, but not necessary.

How many senior tournaments can she play in the year once she turns 17?

Katie has a wildcard into the qualifying of Miami. A great opportunity to try and boost her ranking so she can get into higher level MDs on the ITF tour or even get seeded for tournaments at a higher level. If this allows her to get into say ITF 25k tournaments on a regular basis and is able to go deep in the draw on a regular basis, Katie could really start to rocket up the rankings.

Given how well she played in Israel, I wouldn't say it's out of the question that she does end up qualifying and that would be amazing for her if she ends up playing one of the world's best (shame for her that it wouldn't be Sharapova).

The Miami tournament organisers do tend to look kindly on quality British young players, Kyle was afforded similar opportunities in the past. Paradoxically given their relative rankings in my opinion Katie stands a much better chance of progressing assuming she is fit.

It's because they're signed to IMG
