Week 4 - ITF ($25K) - Sunrise FL, USA - Clay

QR1: Naomi Cavaday WR 455 v (q6) Reka-Luca Jani (HUN) WR 290 (CH 147 in 2012)
QR1: (q7) Katy Dunne WR 295 v Elena Bogdan (ROU) WR 537 (CH 151 in 2011)
QR1: (q8) Emily Webley-Smith WR 300 v Alina Silich (RUS) WR 755 (CH 725 in 2013; 18yo junior CH 35)

Silich has beaten Brits in QR1 the last 2 weeks (Katie by ret. then Izzy in 3 sets before being beaten in 3 by Naomi's QR1 opponent here, Jani) but will hopefully meet her match this time.

Another real tight miss by Naomi . . . :( but good clay court stuff .... Em puts an end to Silich, though, but Katy took a pounding ....

Really gutted for Naomi but I think this tour is still setting her up for a great year, she's clearly showing she's top 300 level.

Nice win for Em, although I think she will struggle in her next one.

Still think Katy's maybe being messed about a bit.

After her great end to last year to end a number of successive weeks to past Christmas, I would have thought she just needed a good rest, recuperation and a more standard training block.

Instead within just a few weeks she is flung back into apparently semi focussed competitive matches. She ended the year in a good place, I wouldn't want this altered by confusion and defeats like this, however theoretically important they are or not.

And where's Katie B now ? She retired from a match previously in this process. Not picked up an injury to effect her ongoing training and competing ?

Anyway, good stuff Emily and another promising looking scoreline from Naomi. I guess though that their focus is less blurred.

It's not just Katie, but Izzy as well who is not competing.

I'm wondering if they have over done it on the trip

Izzy and Katy are coming back after this event. In fact they are probably in the air now if not already landed.

A lot closer than last time they played each other - and Emily even had a match point for a straight sets win - but:

QR2: (q8) Emily Webley-Smith WR 300 lost to Alexandra Mueller (USA) WR 480 (CH 280 in 2009) by 4-6 7-6(6) 6-3

Oh no! Ouch :(

That's a real shame but I really didn't expect that to be so close on clsy, even if Mueller hasn't played a great deal. So I'm strangely encouraged!

Hopefully she has got what she wanted out of these two weeks even if that's a bit of a sore way to go out.

I take it the match point was at 6-5* in the tiebreak? Em's latest instagram post is typically amazing:-

**********

"If the world watched how you worked today, would the world rise to its feet and applaud?" - Robin Sharma

Give me a tough schedule at the start of a long year. Give me a surface I'm not comfortable on. Give me qualifying of a challenger playing for no points and little money. Give me a wet clay court with a 3rd set ball change. Give me 3 giant opponents in a row and make me feel little. Give me bronchitis and antibiotics and a cough that won't quite go. Give me an opponent that I've never beaten and a right arm that is hurting like hell. Give me the last match left playing on a cold dark Monday night in January. Give me a match I don't have to play or need to finish. Give me an uphill struggle, a near impossible challenge, and stack all the odds against me. And I will fight like hell because of this and inspite of this. I will do what I can, with all I have, on that day. I will fight on until there is nothing in me except the will which says to me fight on. Give me a match point after 2 hours. And a loss that hurts like hell after 3 hours. Give me the strength of character to be proud of what I did and what I have given to the day anyway. This is tennis. This is why I play.

**********

Ugh, I just love her.

Oh my, epic instagram post from Emily. Love her.

Yes, I too hope that she has got much of what she wanted from these matches over the last couple of weeks and the body is much more healthy asap.

Top 250 again, indeed new CH, sounds like a challenge to get Emily Webley-Smith going! Just someone tell her that she can't do it :)
