Something for the Statisticians

The big findings I can see are that women in the 1-250 rankings are earning a lot more money than they were 13 years ago, and that because there are more tournaments (mainly 10ks) in Europe, more players (and more European players) are playing in Europe.

edit: Found an error on page 70, SAM, 201-250. There's no way that number (23???) is correct.

I was just skimming that survey too - hard to comment on accuracy or relevance without reading it properly but, at first sight, some detailed analysis like this is long overdue - I hope it gets put to good use.

There is more here - www.batennisworld.com/good-news-from-the-itf/ - more details of player and non-player (coaches, etc) surveys and some startling (if long overdue) proposals for 2016:

- increasing prize money levels (though I wish they'd index them in some way instead of having another set of levels that may stay where they are for years) - no more 10Ks, anyway

- making all Futures & 25K & below ITFs into +H events (not full hospitality but per diem amounts capped at an extra 10K per tournament in total)

Then, to ensure that prize money increases benefit the right players (they're effectively trying to cut the total number of players a bit but enable 150-200 more of them to break even and many more to cut their costs, ultimately trying to ensure that being top 200 is good enough to make a worthwhile living), each new prize category is intended to:

- Have a set number of job opportunities each week (i.e. better calendar management from the centre, I assume, as on the main tours)
- be geographically spread
- benefit from clear play down rules (also long overdue)

They are also intending to offer a new, entry level tier offering points that enable players to progress onto this new ITF Pro Tour.

There will be some losers as well as winners out of this but overall, it seems pretty coherent - I hope they implement it!

Very interesting, Steven.

I particularly like the idea of a seemingly bigger pie, but with also less players, so that many more can ultimately be reasonably well fed.

Yes I like it, I think the play-down rules are a good step as well. I do think that $10ks might arguably still be suitable in places like Sharm, Antalya and El Kantaoui, where events are being held every week as a continuous circuit.

Seems very sensible. Nice to read via Mr Rothenberg that Eric Butorac has also said that looking at Challengers is a priority for him as ATP Player Council President.

ITF to Increase Prize Money

Sorry if this has been posted somewhere else previously, but I haven't seen this before.

It seems as though the ITF have now published their proposals for increasing prize money from 2016.  Here is a link with some of the details.

http://www.batennisworld.com/good-news-from-the-itf/

Not sure if I am reading this correctly but I interpret "Mens Pro Circuit: Initial two levels rise to 15K+H* and 25K +H*." as meaning that these tournament prize structures will replace the current 10k and 15k events. I wonder if this will mean a reduction in the overall number of tournaments.

In the above article, there are also links to the results of player surveys which I haven't had time to read yet.

Thats an interesting read Bob. Much as I think thats fantastic news, the downside is I would imagine it will lead to a much reduced programme. I don't think theres anything wrong with 10k's as such, perhaps as an entry level event with lesser points(?) as long as there is much more larger prize money events for the more established players outside the top 300.

Taken from the survey article :-

"The average cost, not including coaching, of competing last year was $38,800 for male players and $40,180 for female players. The distribution and levels of prize money in the professional game meant that the break even point on the combined singles and doubles earnings list (i.e. the point where average costs met actual earnings) was 336 for men and 253 for women in 2013."

These figures will be assuming the players are taking no drawings for personal use and also will be based on the minimum amount of international travel. Talking to players at this level it seems the break even point is much nearer to 100-120 (atp and wta) at which point every player has a full time coach which then pushes the break even point further towards 70-80 !

Ask any male player at 300 or female player at 250 about the financial calculations in the survey and you'll begin to get the real picture. cry

Challenger prize money

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere - report on the ATP site about increases in Challenger prize money http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2015/01/1/ATP-Challenger-Tour-Prize-Money.aspx

If it is somewhere else  I'll delete this thread in the morning!

No this article hasn't been flagged up anywhere yet, but it links in pretty much to the discussions following the ITF survey and suggestions on restructuring/ prize money etc.  It's in the thread Something For The Statisticians.  Given the flow of the postings though, it should probably have a more sensible title now.  Not sure if I can do that as the person who started the thread.  I'll try, but if not perhaps one of the Mods could combine our threads and give the combined one a better name.

edit: have changed the name so maybe someone can combine these threads....
