Week 44 - Challenger ($50,000) - Traralgon, Australia (Hard)

Tricky draws for both Brits:

L32: Brydan Klein WR 253 v (WC) John Millman (AUS) WR 287 (CH 126 in 2013)

H2H 3-0 but they last met in 2010. Back in April after a year out, Millman has reached a Challenger SF (Sacramento) and a Challenger final (Tiburon) this month.

L32: Kyle Edmund WR 242 v (2) Bradley Klahn (USA) WR 122 (CH 63 in Mar)

Good to see young John again as a potential British conquest after my typo during one of the California challengers.

hopefuly Brydan will see off john the milkman who allegedly has the fastest forehand in world tennis....

Its past-your-eyes before you see it. Not quite as fast as his dad Earny mind.

Tough draws but H2H for Brydan in his favour and Klahn is well out of form having dropped just under 60 places in the last 6-9 months.

Expecting a tight match for Brydan and a win for Kyle. Just hope Kyle can be resilient against Klahn's tantrums!

Of course Kyle's not in great form himself (although it's hard to gauge his current level given the standard of opposition).

Hopefully Andy's performance in Valencia this week will affect the rest of the British boys particularly the younger ones. Robrrdo and Ferrer were magnificent but the difference between top 4 and 15 is working out where and when you will have an edge, divising, training to and delivering that plan with total faith in your ability to win and your fitness.

That's a lot of points off for Brydan. Good job he clocked up some good wins a few weeks ago.

People had been talking about him being near the top 200 mark by the end of the year - but he was always going to be vulnerable to a tricky draw here and not being able to play back-to-back tournaments when getting right through to the end of an event and playing lots of matches.

Not so good.

Re Kyle, Klahn is of course relatively a very good player when near his best, which he hasn't generally been lately. But pity Kyle has not really pushed on just recently and these fallaway sets seem to happen too regularly, this time just the second set of a first round match.

Of course he is overall progressing and has had a good rankings jump this year, and I am one to agree that players clearly progress at very different rates and times. But I do feel he has a very important close season ahead ( work on endurance for one and that may include mental endurance ) and then a very important 2015.

Not a good time for Brydan to lose his 100% record against Millman, as CD implies. He will fall about 40 places to just below Evo (both of them probably just inside the top 300) when last year's SF points come off.

Kyle has now lost 6 matches in a row since late August, though his R1s in that time have included a top seed (Querrey), the 2nd seed here and Fratangelo, so the draws haven't been doing him many favours.

Kyle showed a lot of promise in his mid-season successes, in my opinion, so this doesn't worry me too much. We all know how it could change if Kyle were to get a few decent draws early next year and he could string some points together. As has been said, close season will be very important for Kyle to push on and keep working, to come into the new year a little bit stronger and a little bit tougher.

2 sets in 6 matches against average competition. Apart from Querrey all are pretty decent, but "good on their day" type players at best. At this stage, Kyle should be 3-3 at worst against this level of competition, not 0-6. Even without Greg, I would have expected Kyle to be top 200 by now, and based on an encouraging start to the year. With Greg one would hope for much more. Whatever happened to Greg? Is it possible that Greg's almost unintelligible gibberish (at times) has befuddled Kyle's game?
