Week 44 - Challenger (€35,000+H) - Réunion Island (Hard)

James Ward should be in the main draw here.

QR1: Joe Cooper UNR v Leo Julien Sebaoun (JPN) WR 2030 (CH 1836 in Apr)

There are very few ranked players in the qualifying draw - the 4th Q seed is ranked outside the top 1000 and the 8th Q seed (in Joe's section) outside the top 2000 but the winner of Joe's match is likely to face 2nd Q seed Nastasi WR 811 in QR2.

This is a quite laughably weak field. Stefan Merunka made the main draw with a ranking of 1722.

Ward should make the SFs at least but Haase and Berankis are also playing here and will be ranked 1 and 2.

Not surprising the draw is weak. Reunion is not the easiest place in the world to get to, or the cheapest - our daughter spent 6 months there as part of her year abroad for her languages degree. Nice place, nice weather, pineapples straight from the tree - but flights from Paris are not all that frequent. Or they weren't in 2000.

Reunion can also be wet and hold various records. In Jan of 1966, 73 inches of rain was recorded in a 24 hour period.

I wonder if this will be streamed.  I'm guessing that their IT infrastructure may not be as Europe's.

That's a long way to go to lose in the QR1 of a tournament ... hope that he at least enjoys the experience of visiting the island.

Hope Ward can at least live up to his seeding, thoughts?

He popped across from Zimbabwe where he has played for the last couple of weeks.

Joe seems to be travelling the world playing tennis in recent weeks and he's no spring chicken.

Ward also playing doubles with Riba, unfortunately they've drawn the no.1 seeds in R1

Should at least make the QFs. His is in the same quarter as the 5th seed (Krajicek) which is easily the toughest QF draw he could have got but will be favourite for that. Haase is the SFs would be very tough.

At the moment James is scheduled to play Reunion, Traralgon, Helsinki which doesn't seem to me to be the best scheduling. I wonder if he will end up playing all of them.

I guess it depends how far he goes in each week, getting to Australia at short notice wouldn't be easy...
