Yes, Bethanie's piteous screams of agony could be overheard on the commentary for many minutes, very distressing.
An 'acute knee injury', which Mary Pierce was recalling her own experience of on Radio 5.
Wish her every possible best wishes, and hope that the prognosis is somehow better than feared.

I hope they think better of showing it on the evening wimbledon summary program on BBC.

Yes, I do too, though rather fear the prurient rubberneckers are in the majority - David Busst and Joe Theisman's mis-fortunes are amongst the highest rated sports videos.

Sadly, the way of the world cry

Well Bethanie's injury is every much as bad as feared. From Carole Bouchard on Twitter

"Knee dislocated, tendon ruptured. Surgery needed. "I'll be out for a while", she says tearing up"

Such a pity, when her career was going so well

I see Izzy Wallace is giving WTA qualies a go this week in Bucharest, best of luck to her.

Yes best of luck to Izzy, who essentially would be British other than for tennis reasons.

Reading about Manisha who had 'Patellar Tedonopathy ' in both knees.

Which is why, a little while back, she was out of tennis for over a year.

Don't think it's relevant now but all the best, anyway, Manisha.

Back to Izzy Wallace: massive congratulations to her, as today she claimed her first $25K title, in Koksijde, Belgium
Her 3rd title of the year. Probably moves her well into the top 300.

Interesting article about the current spate of injuries in the men's game leading up to the US Open.

www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/41071538

Surely the make of ball could be standardized across the ATP tour - or is money from sponsors/ball manufacturers more important.

46 year old Kimiko Date announces her second retirement.
Both sections of her career were pretty remarkable in one way or another.
I think she's earned her retirement now
Will miss a player who always had a massive smile for everyone.

From Freya's tweets, it looks like she's had a wrist injury. Which is why she withdrew from the recent competitions. And may be why she was struggling before too.
However, she's tweeted herself now hitting backhands (for the first time in a while) and enjoying it.

Get better soon, Freya.

Can't help thinking that this is where Serena Williams could put her vast wealth to some good. Whatever you think of Chritiano Ronaldo, he has history of getting involved in financially supporting stuff like this for young kids.

I hate to say it but this says a lot about what it is like to be not so well off in the States; it also says something about what it is like to be Black and living in the States but I guess I will leave it at that and not cause any controversy.  I hope she finds a way forwards.

All NY times links go to a shopping page - think this is their answer to being non-subscrption.
