RE: Week 43 - Great Britain F22 ($10,000) - Tipton (Hard)

Willis is a big game big point player, he seems to enjoy being the underdog and seems more gritty with an audience and a big occasion. He seems to struggle far more when expected to win and getting motivated which has led to loads of lost opportunities in tournaments. He's shown previously in wimbledon qualies, junior tournaments, and playing the better players early in tournaments and challenger qualies that he's got the ability when motivated to beat all kinds of players (thinks Bastl).
I think he risks overconfidence at futures and really should be mixing with the bigger players - it suits his personality more maybe and he can do it and will only find out if he can do it consistently if he tries. It seems logical to have a mix of the two especially if seriously considering slams. Knowing there's the odd futures after a run of challengers shouldn't lead to despair if failing in challengers thinking they can recoup points in futures. It would also suit Lewis's aspirations if he wants to step up to some challenger doubles although I still think there's something in Lewis for singles. He's still young and considering they're both not getting proper coaching..

Mix it up asap or risk of losing confidence at futures level and just standing still on points.

So it's a bit of a dilemma because Lewis is now focusing on doubles and is ready for challengers but its a nice problem to have

Interesting if this is definite. If true, i wouldn't be surprised if it has been down to the pretty dismal year he's had in singles, especially watching Marcus fly through whilst he has just hovered around 700.

Lewis has a big game and he probably will have a lot success in doubles should he choose to go down this route (A younger BBD in my opinion). He's still very young though and if we look at the top doubles players they're literally all 30 and over so he has so much time on his hands if he wanted to go down this route.

He still does have a game that will unsettle big players on the quicker courts in singles so maybe playing the challenger qualies alongside some doubles - but then it may be the case of needing to play a few futures to get his singles ranking high enough to make qualy cuts...

Worked out if Lewis and Marcus could win another 3 futures titles this year it would put both their rankings into the top 300, so a combined of under 600 which would be great to build on in 2014

All the best to Marcus and Lewis, but with GB having doubles players performing very well at ATP level, Marcus and Lewis have such a long way to go and so much to prove yet.

A much of 1000 miles starts with 1 step !

The key is that we have created a partnership

that is superior to anything an all GB pair hv achieved at their age ,

We have time a quality support team & funding so we are airborne

End of 2014 - 180-240 ranking

End of 2015 - 100-180

End of 2016 - 50-100

It's good to have targets.

Can I just clarify Gary ( since it can be a bit confusing with doubles ) are these individual doubles rankings targets for Marcus and Lewis or the combined ( addition ) targets such as are used for entry lists or what ?

i.e. for the end of 2016, is the target to have each of Marcus and Lewis ranked 50 - 100 or the sum of their two individual rankings to be between 50 and 100 ?
