RE: ATP & WTA rankings of the 25th best Brits over time

There is a big gap in the men's rankings for GB players from 750 -1000 now, just Marzi and Jonny in that gap and Marzi seems to be going backwards

Bob's 20 in the top 500 dream has been on hold for some time now. Very few of those outside the top 500 have been showing much form in the early part of the season and with the number already inside the Top 500 currently standing at just 13, the dream seems a long way off.

BUT:

Is it me, (and my rose tinted spectacles) or are there early signs of life from some of those with potential to boost that number of 13. In the last couple of weeks, there have been signs that Neil P and Rich G are beginning to find a bit of form. Both are in QFs this week. Toby appears to be suddenly reaping the benefits of the changes he has been applying to his game. Then there is the enigma that is Dan E who is back playing and whilst it is early days, the tweets from Notts Academy suggest he has been working with them, so maybe there is hope of a sustained comeback.

Also, with summer "recess" coming up (as the Americans would call it), I am hoping that the our college players such as Cam and Farris will be seen playing a few weeks on the circuit as well.

Clearly it is still a very outside bet, but perhaps not quite so "outside" as would have been considered a few weeks back.

Time to reopen the debate.

Yes, good to see more life outside the top 500 this week.

I do think the numbers are there of potentially top 500 players, starting with the current 13, Evo, Farris and Cameron.

Add Richard Gabb, Neil Pauffley and Toby Martin and you have 19. James Marsalek and you have 20.

The, I would suggest, proven ability of Tom Farquharson, but very limited ITF competition and you have 21.

The still potential of Josh Ward- Hibbert, Luke Bambridge abd Joe Salisbury and you have 24.

It's how little slack in mumbers there is, especially among the more likely top 500 entrants, that I think remains the problem.

An awful lot has to come together at once.

I think 10 in top 300 in more of a challenge along with 15 in top 400 and 20 in top 500 for the men.

Might take a little time, but I can see all three happening this year.

I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I can see daylight on 10 in the top 300.

We currently have 7 in the top 300.(Ed is dropping rapidly, but is entered in Sweden). Evo is provisionally in the top 300 on live rankings and Milts, Cox and Alex Ward are all knocking on the door, with Marcus not too far behind.

Unfortunately there only looks like the injury prone Smethy who could enter the top 300 in the near future and not many attacking the top 500 other than Gabb and Rice.

I wonder when was the last time that the 25th ranked player on the men's list was ranked outside the Top 1000 ?

13th February 2017

... but yes not for quite some while before then. Looking at Steven's quarterly figures for the 25th GB player in the stats section I think probably as far back as early 2011.

If Billy Harris wins his QF in Portugal it's sorted again. Extremely tough ask though against the #1 seed. If he remains on 11 points I think that will be one point short for now.

On Monday week, 20/03, the 25th ranked British guy, Billy Harris, is still going to be short of the 12 points that seems probably needed to get into the top 1000.

We will have #24 Josh Paris on 13 points, then assuming no challenger points suddenly added next week ...

25. Billy Harris 11
26. Keelan Oakley 10
27. Alastair Gray 9
28. Joe Salisbury 8
29. Tom Farquharson 8
30. Jonathan Gray 8

It will then be June before any of these has any further points coming off ( and Josh Paris just has the one prior point coming off in May ) and there are some guys there certainly with the ability to get into the top 1000 and indeed with such as Tom much much more.
