So John Isner is involved in another marathon match ( even if small beer compared to his Wimbledon match ), losing 18 - 16 in the 5th set to Matthieu.  Such matches can be a fascinating watch at the time but don't help the winner's future prospects.  Personally I see no logic in final sets not being consistent with other sets and gaving a tiebreaker at 6 all, one thing in my view that the US Open gets right. However, if anyone wishes to try and persuade me otherwise...

Interesting opinion of Johan Kriek, two-times Australian Open champion, about Serena lost in Paris. I like his point because Johan not just express his thoughts about Serena Williams lost in the first round of Roland Garros, as many already did. He also explain how should tennis players deal with that kind of the situation on the tennis court. http://wp.me/p2iyrR-8r

What is so odd to me, is that it's years since either williams sisters have lost in the first rounds (haven't checked about Venus, but I think it's a first for Serena), then they both do it in the same competition.

How jolly interesting that the French call the first deuce "quarante a (quarante)" and all subsequent deuces "egalite". Crafty devils.

These Frenchies don't learn, do they? Today they have AGAIN scheduled 4 matches on each of the two main courts, PLUS the overruns from yesterday - which were of course caused by scheduling 4 matches on each court. Let's guess what might happen ... (and don't get me started on the Roland Garros iPhone App)

When I was at RG last Tuesday it was as bad. There were hardly any boards showing the (changing) order of play on the outside courts and no announcements or use of scoreboards to give info.

So having carefully plotted to see a James Blake vs Youhzny match by watching the preceeding women's singles I was hopping mad to discover there was no more play on the court we were on, no announcements and people were still filing in to see the match.

Oh and the information stands shut while matches were still in play, helpful heh.

That said lovely tennis and I'll go again.

At least not having a iphone thats one bit of misery I've avoided !

An iPhone would have told you the court had been moved, though ...

I wonder whether there's ANYONE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD who switches on Eurosport, and thinks to themself: "Look, it's Virginia Wade commentating, oh goody."

Roland Garros has just announced that there's been a very big increase in prize money for the qualis:

PRIZE MONEY MENS AND WOMENS SINGLES QUALIFYING
MENS AND WOMENS SINGLES QUALIFYING
2018 PRIZE MONEY (in euros)

Per player Increase on 2017
Third round 21,000 16.67%
Second round 11,000 22.22%
First round 6,000 20%

And about 14% increase for R1.

Also, it will be filming/livestreaming ALL the tennis matches at this year's RG.

That will make for a very weak draw in Loughborough

By what is being bandied around on Twitter, this announcement has been made unilaterally without any discussion with either players or the ATP. I think there will be repercussions.
