Andy starts the week where he ended week 41: on 19th.


Andy's not defending Madrid points, so only loses 10 points as his 18th score (a 15) gets replaced.


Losing ground are Gonzalez and Nieminen ahead of Andy and  Hrbaty, Acasuso and Calleri behind.


As there's loads of points on offer, Andy could climb up as high as 12th should he win the tournament. Players down below Tim could overtake.


Edit:  This post has been changed as Madeline very kindly pointed out that Hewitt doesn't drop any places, contrary to what I'd said. This is because he is defending a 0 from last year. I've also updated Ancic, Gaudio and Gasquet's scores following Madeline's emails!

And he'll overtake Hewitt, because (Get this!!) he has more points from mandatory tournaments (Grand Slams and Masters series) than Hewitt does

Andy's win today sees him gain back one place. However from here on in, it becomes very difficult to move further without some help from us and our pins! All the top 20 except for Hewitt and Stepanek (whatever happened to him?) are playing this week, amazingly. Unfortunately that means Andy needs all of them to lose in the early rounds while he goes on to win the tournament to make any significant moves upwards.


So the optimists view:


If Andy wins his second round match he will overtake Djokovic and Nieminen if they both go out in the second round (ie don't win any matches as I think they both have byes round 1).


If Andy wins his third round match he could overtake...nobody!!


If he then won his quarter final match he would overtake...no one again.


If he then won his semi he would overtake Stepanek, and Ferrer providing he goes out before the quarters.


If he then won the final he would gain another two places if Haas goes out before the semis and Ancic, before the third round (ie losing his first match).


Threats from behind Andy are numerous and just itching to defeat the now famous pin work of the Andrew Murray Message Board Vodoo Society (AMMBVS for short), so we must prove to one and all that the itching is just the pins taking their toll Detail on the threats will appear sometime tomorrow.

Tursunov kindly leaves the building, as Kristof Vliegen beats him in straights: That's what I like to see: Andy's threats departing in order: Gaudio first, then Tursunov, That would mean JC Ferrero will go next although if Gasquet wants to beat him to it.....

Here is the pessimists post:


It's actually not as bad as I thought it would be.


If Andy loses in the second round: He could lose places to JC Ferrero (a third round appearance), Gasquet (final), Hrbaty (final), Acasuso (final), Soderling (final), Calleri (win), and Vliegen (win). Worst case: drop of 3 places to 21.


If Andy loses in the third round: He could lose places to the same people but everyone must go a further round (Vliegen and Calleri can still overtake by winning) so Worst case: drop of 2 places to 18 if Djokovic loses second round, 19 if not.


If Andy loses in the quarters: He could lose places to everyone except Vliegen. Worst case: drop of 2 to 18 if Djokovic loses second round, 19 if not.


If Andy loses in the semis: He could no longer be overtaken by Soderling or Calleri and JCF would need a final showing to overtake. Worst case: drop of 2 to 18 if Djokovic loses before the semis, 19 if not.


If Andy loses in the final: He could only lose out to Ferrero and it would be a double whammy as Ferrero would be playing(and beating) him in the final. Worst case: drop of 1 to 15.


If Andy wins the final: He is uncatchable!


So Andy cannot lose more than 3 places this week, and hopefully won't lose any.
