A very difficult choice between Sonay and Mika. I finally opted for Sonay as she seems to be surging up the rankings to join Emma as part of a potential future BJK Cup team, until such time as Mika, Mimi and Hannah take over.
Sonay for me. Of all the achievements this month, this was the most unexpected. She'd never won a match on the WTA Tour before and she ended up winning the event. In a year she thought at one stage she might have had to miss due to health reasons. What she lacks in height she makes up for in tenacity and intelligent play.
Otherwise I'd have probably gone for Mika whose victory was also out of the blue and a fantastic effort, particularly her win over Iva Jovic. And can't believe Jake's back to back titles are only third on my list. He's had a phenomenal breakthrough summer from a standing start, and a fantastic advert for college tennis. And Jack's US Open semifinal is relegated to fourth. What a crazy month.
Mika is the female of the month - A grand slam champion. If that wasn't enough, she did it being only 15 years of age. And if that wasn't convincing then consider she didn't have an easy route to the final, having to defeat the home favourite, Jovic, and in an earlier round the junior No 1 elect, Emmerson, on the way to the final. Our other Grand Slam singles champions have been run away winners of the PoM.
Jake is the male of the month - Most consistent over the month. Winning 2 challenger titles, moving into the top 100 in only his 4th month of going full-time pro since leaving college. What more is there to be said?
How am I meant to choose between them for player of the month?
Well, for me the US Open left an interesting choice between Dan, Jack and Mika and their quite differing highlights.
Then Sonay sorted out that choice, so none of them, it was going to be Sonay's month. Well it was until Jake came along with a second challenger title in the month and he too into the top 100.

The 35 votes so far surpasses last years September haul of 33, so that is great. September has often been a slow month, and maybe we have got all the votes in early this month. But it probably says more about how a decent month of results from the Brits peaks our general interest and excitement in British tennis and ends up reflecting in participation in things like this.
36 hours still to go. So, hopefully, a fair few votes still to come in.
