2023 ITF Wheelchair Tour

In the doubles, Alfie and Gordon keep the flag flying and win - Alfie now in both semis.

Ben Bartram went down as did Andy Lapthorne, (in doubles) and there is therefore just Lucy Shuker to finish her doubles QF - she is a set up

Left in we have:

Alfie - mens singles semis
Alfie and Gordon - mens doubles semis
Lucy - currently playing womens doubles QF

Alfie won in style, very comfortably, 1 and 1. Into the Aussie Open mens singles final where he plays Oda, the third seeded Japanese.

Alfie also won the doubles semi with Gordon and play unseeded Dutch pair Scheffers and Spaargaren in the final.

Lucy went down in her doubles semi.

Well done Alfie and Alfie/Gordon!

In singles, Alfie has been in the last 2 AO finals but never won it- he has won 3 French
And 3 US Open titles though. First AO title in the offing?

As a pair, the lads have won the last 3 AO titles so hopefully a 4th coming? Theyve won too many doubles titles to count and now Gordon is fit again, hopefully more!

And we have winners (sorry Ive forgotten how to do a emoji of someone holding a trophy, remind me?!) as Alfie and Gordon coast to the Aussie Open Wheelchair Mens Doubles title !

This is their fourth straight AO title but it comes after Gordon suffered from injury and poor form for a good part
Of the past year so is a welcome return to the top for them!

Alfies got the singles final tomorrow!

PS just to say Jon I know you dont get a lot of replies throughout the year in the wheelchair threads but the updates are always appreciated as its not something I would follow by myself outside of the Slams and Paralympics.

Hurrah! Thanks Wolf and also for the nice comments. Its great that we all have ways we contribute and find a little niche ! Wheelchair tennis isnt something I really got interested in until coming on this board- I saw some action one Wimbledon , it was Gordon Reid playing I think and it caught my attention as the play was impressive and so Ive kept an eye on it since.

As Ive got to understand the tour structure , Ive started looking more at results and rankings beyond the slams; the depth is still relatively low, so many events outside the slams or super series, maybe ITF series 1, are quite weak - the player
Pool is smaller obviously - and the results to keep closer to the rankings , fewer upsets, but the play at the top end is impressive. And we
Have a few players at the top of the game , like Alfie and Gordon, so it is good to follow.

The next big event is the massive ABN event in Rotterdam. It is a series 1 event, but has a $70k prize fund, the biggest outside the slams ; it is historically just mens but they added womens last season (not quads I dont believe) and is probably the strongest non slam event in reality despite just being a series 1 event - it isnt super series as the field is kept to just 12
Men and 8 women. Its a bit of a an early season Masters really. Starts mid Feb!

Alfie and Gordon had won 10 straight Slam doubles titles through the FO last year, but lost at Wimbledon and then the US Open as Gordon seemed to struggle. They have worked hard to get back to winning ways and now make it 11 out of last 13.

Utterly dominant

Alfie wins the mens singles title , 3 and 1. Its his first AO singles, his 7th slam - the only one of the 4 he hasnt won now is Wimbledon. Time to fix that in July. For now, well done Alfie Hewett!

From the BBC:

An emotional Alfie Hewett claimed his first Australian Open men's wheelchair singles title with victory over Japan's Tokita Oda.

Runner-up in the past two years, Britain's Hewett dominated Oda 6-3 6-1 to add the individual prize to the fourth doubles title he won alongside Gordon Reid on Friday.

It is Hewett's seventh Grand Slam singles title.

He now only needs victory at Wimbledon to complete the career Grand Slam.

Hewett is also a 16-time major doubles champion and completed the calendar Slam with Reid in 2021.

In the women's wheelchair singles, Dutch world number one Diede de Groot recovered from a difficult first set to win her fifth successive Australian Open title.

She beat Yui Kamiji 0-6 6-2 6-2 in one hour and 48 minutes.
