Entry Week 42 - 17/10/2022

And Jack beat Brooksby at Eastbourne 2 and 2.

Hopefully all 3 can get through

6 byes in Glasgow qualifying for the women no

 Ridiculous.

Gb Women's tennis should be ashamed of itself

There were only 17 on the alt list (one non-Brit and several that I haven't seen on any lists before) and several slots spare in qualifying. Still ar ound 2/3 of our ranked players missing.

Wonder who gets MDWC's - Marni, Jasmine plus who ?

9 of the top 20 are playing. I would imagine that those below 600 would feel that they would be better off playing in 25's or 15's. What puzzles me more are those six between 9 and 17 on the alt list who haven't withdrawn and yet don't sign in. They would be unlikely to win a round in qualifying but would know that when they entered. This is not the first of UK's ITF events this year which has not filled qualifying so the lesson should have been learned.

Three points for a first round win in qualifying - must have tempted some of them surely. I'm more concerned about those who withdrew early but would have easily got in. To name a few:- Alice G, Holly H, Beth, Matilda, Eden, Emily W-S (OK some of those were out of the country over the last couple of weeks)

I just don't get the vacant places

There was a British Tour event in Glasgow this week - why didn't those players enter here????

Yes, of course there's a big jump in level - but they're up in Glasgow, they're fit and playing, it's a match week, it's great experience, why on earth not put yourself in?

There is no thread for Guadalajara as we had no Brits playing, so putting this here. Sorry if somewhere
More appropriate. Overnight results mean that 7 of the 8 wta finals places are taken. Two things of note: Caroline Garcia qualified so there are 3 players (Gauff and Pegula the others) in singles and doubles fields. Thats quite unusual !

The final spot is down to two players , Kudermatova and Sakkari. No one else can qualify. And they play each other in the qfs tonight - its a straight fight for the final spot. Thats a pressure match. Kudermatova is ahead on points but Sakkari is close enough that if she wins, she leapfrogs her.

Winner takes all.

Garcia only qualified in singles. Sakkari takes the last spot. Kudermetova would have been in both draws if she'd beaten Sakkari

That singles match between Sakkari and the Russian went v close though! Glad Sakkari made it, she and Jabeur are both characters in the womens game.

hadnt realised Kudermatova was so strong in doubles - I was wrong re Garcia, but the general wider point of top singles players playing and doing well in doubles is good to see and something the men might follow - Nick K is the only one really doing it at the top of the game.

Somewhere in Sakkari is a great player but she only has a single WTA title to her name (the one where she beat our own JoKo in 2019). Up until this year, Garcia has been in the wilderness for literally years (some would say since that infamous Andy Murray tweet where she had reached no 4 in the world). It's easier to be a doubles and singles player in the WTA because of the BO3. Nick K is a part time ATP player at best.

The big change recently for Caroline is her coaching set-up

Up until May 2021 she was coached by her dad. That worked well up to a point. Especially when she was younger.

But in 2021 she changed to Urpi Ribas, the Spaniard (previously with Panetta)

He was pretty much as equally good singles and doubles player himself, and Panetta got to dubs WR 1 as well as Grand Slam winner in singles.

Caroline certainly has had a new lease of life since he's taken over.....

Ah Mr Soul Patch, glad she has gotten a different coach. As you say, it certainly seems to have done her the world of good.

Hes also been with Mahut, Svitolina, Conchita M and Arantxa S-V as well, seems to have had a very strong coaching career. His name threw me at first, but Gabriel Urpi I of course remembered - the Ribas bit was new to me!
