Weeks 26 and 27 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - women's singles

Sonay learning it's not a break unless you consolidate!

2-1*

Good performance from Swan, not much between the players at all. The injury cost her in the second set, couldn't get the first serve in. Still, she's on an upward trajectory, her tennis game is improving significantly month by month.

Katie fought hard to save 4 bps at 1-1 in the 2nd set then played a shocking run of points from 40-15 to get broken in her next service game. More errors cost her the 2nd break in that set though Marta did contribute two good points towards the break.

Swan needed to do a lot better returning 2nd serves. So many woeful returns that failed to make the court. Marta didn't face a single bp in the 3rd set despite 50% first serve percentage in the set.

Lots of good play from Katie. She wasn't far away.

She really needs the breaks of having a good run fit and well, physically and mentally. To my mind the underlying tennis has always been there to be a top 100 player.

 Yes, I agree.

It's all very well saying she fought hard and was slightly injured.

But her return of serve definitely was really weak.

And that's not really an injury thing, just a weak part of her game that cost her

I agree, and the more tennis she plays against the better players, that will bring her game on too.

Yes the 30-15* return at 3-4* in the third for example was a disaster.

Much better from Sonay, settled into her tennis and the occasion, stayed solid when she hit the front.

4-6 6-3 0-0*

Oh dear, Sonay 0-3 down in the decider. (And Jubb just lost the 3rd set)

The talent has long been there for Katie Swan. But far too often she looks fragile and suffers too many injuries.
I agree with others. If she could just get a break and stay fit her ranking could soar.
It's been too much stop and start for Katie.

Yeah, she just seems resigned to the L

Looks like she just wants to get off the court - like she's got something better to do.

No focus, no drive, no purpose. Shocking final set from Sonay who behaved like she'd given up after the first game which she lost from 30-0*.

Really disappointing, she's so much better than that. Ugh. What an opportunity. I mean I guess it leaves getting double bagelled by Iga to Lesley, so that's something haha.

But seriously, the lack of fight, of willingness to dig in and battle, in that final set was really surprising. Still, it's been a fast rise and excited for the rest of her season.

Sonay has beaten Leslie twice in two sets this season so this is a rather odd result. I wonder if she had some sort of problem.
