Starmer has been a real disappointment, I agree. The polls show that despite everything, Tories had strengthened a couple of points and Labour fallen a percentage point, so the gap is in fact widening. Which given the current situation is preposterous and reflects very badly on Labour and their leadership

Interesting thread re the number of infections from Robert Peston (ITV)

Basically he is saying that the number of daily infections does NOT include reinfections. So if you now test positive, but also had Covid last year, for example, you are NOT included in the daily figure. This suggests that the true number of daily infections is somewhat higher.

The number of hospital admissions is overstated significantly according to a report released.

All patients are tested, but 25% are in hospital for another reason.

Anyone have an issue with the covid tracker app draining their iPhone battery?

Been having an issue for the last few weeks with the battery only lasting ~ 6 hours. Googled and followed all the battery saving tips but didnt help much. Someone at work mentioned having the same issue and had run diagnostics that pinpointed the covid tracker app. Switched the app off and normal battery service resumed. Dont know why its suddenly become an issue hmm

Probably blutooth being more active. I noticed something simlar on my (Android) phone when I had the app running whilst away recently. Try switching off blutooth when you don't need the app running.

In recent weeks the number of people I actually know who have tested positive for Corona, is higher than at any point in the pandemic. These are all people who have had either one or two doses of the vaccine.

What are the implications moving forward? This means herd immunity is "not a possibility" because the Delta variant is still spreading fast and infecting fully vaccinated people.

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard told MPs in the all-party parliamentary group on coronavirus that although 95% vaccination would stop transmission of measles, the same was not true for COVID.

Vaccines have been shown to reduce the concentration of virus particles, or viral loads, in the airways of individuals who become infected, lowering the probability of them transmitting their infection to others. Delta, though, is associated with viral loads that are more than 1,200 times higher in newly infected individuals compared with the original coronavirus strain -- a feature that helps delta spread as easily as chickenpox.

I just did not understand this. AZ arent making a killing from the vaccine, unlike those selling the RNA vaccine (Pfizer, Moderna, Biontech) yet received really bad press. it really is a messed up world hmm

After reaching the height of new UK cases a few weeks ago and then coming signigicantly down we seem to have for now plateaued at quite a high level wirh deaths beginning to plateau too as we have come down from the previous higher new case level.

Week 17/07 - 23/07 : 305,649 new cases, 402 deaths
Week 24/07 - 30/07 : 195,483 new cases, 503 deaths
Week 31/07 - 06/08 : 183,259 new cases, 593 deaths
Week 07/08 - 13/08 : 198,156* new cases, 623 deaths

With so much having been relaxed ( too much re such an effective component as face coverings in England IMO, particularly with the Delta strain being so much more transmittable - Johnson I feel knew they were wrong but wouldn't do the necessary complete u-turn and continue to make it mandatory in certain situations ) vaccine take up would seem to me soo important for having a much more reductive effect on such still high figures ( even with these numbers of vaccinated people still catching covid, it will reduce the numbers and partucularly the seriousness ) . And surely everyone who reasonably can be expected to take the vaccine should do so. It is simply not good enough for others to hope for a more normal life but to not take the vaccine themselves, but hope to live off the coattails of these who do take the vaccine.

* the last week in particular will come down a bit with follow up negative PCR tests.
