Coronavirus - general, non tennis related

Unsurprisingly, that could have been clearer from Johnson. Needed more clarity, particularly regarding folk being encouraged to return to work - surely more emphasis on "if safe to do so" ie the travelling is being encouraged, if can't work from home, however unsafe working conditions, where social distancing is impossible, are not - ie before employers start demanding folk return to work!

And it needed more emphasis on what wasn't actually. changing- eg. social distancing except with your own household ( especially after the speculation about extended bubbles ).

Anyway here in Scotland ( and Sturgeon would have preferred Johnson had made it clearer that he waa almost exclusively talking about England ) we have a few differences :
1) We are not being encouraged to return to work away from home unless it is essential work - and that will generally not include such as construction, manufacturing and retail.
2) We are to execise near our homes and not drive to other spots. Although we can now exercise more than once a day.
3) We can't sunbathe or picnic away from our home ( though I can see that changing fairly soon ( after she hummed and hawed a bit to a query regarding that you can go round and round the park but not stop to enjoy the sun ).

I feel we needed another of couple of weeks of clarity to empty ITUs the number of beds we have at present were created by using every potential space in the hospital that could have been adapted. Paediatric ITU converted for adults, recover bays, operating theatres etc... need to clear them so can get on and treat other problems (much more slowly given all the PPE and cleaning required) and minimise collateral damage. We cannot afford to go backwards and put the breaks on, damage will have been done.

Bit puzzled by Boris but Matt Lucas has cleared it all up

Here in Spain we were all issued, by email, with 40 pages of explanation of the transition process back to the "new normal", as they are calling it. It gives a detailed plan of what each industry sector can do at each stage of the 4 stage process.

Whilst I agree that last night's broadcast from Boris has generated more questions than answers, I will wait until the detail is presented today in the HoC. I think it would have been unrealistic to expect him to give out every small detail in a 15 minute broadcast. It will also be interesting to see if they fully publish the detailed plan and make it available to employers and the general public. This would be an important step for me.

Overall I was pleased that he didn't relax the lock down measures more quickly but I fear that some members of the public will see his comments last night as a green light to go back to life as "normal". Like Oakland, I think another couple of weeks could have made a real difference.

The one issue that did concern me about his speech is when he said that people can travel by car to go and take their exercise. I have visions of hoards of currently furloughed workers suddenly turning up in the Derbyshire Dales, or in the Lake District to walk their dogs. The policy going forwards seems to be Test, Trace, Isolate and by that, I take it that the idea is to identify hot spots of infection and to apply restrictions locally in that area. Given that approach, it seems that giving people the right to travel will be counterproductive. We don't know still how many people in the community are infected but asymptomatic, so I would have preferred to see travel for leisure restricted to eg 3 miles from your house.

Here in Spain, we are ahead of the UK in the curve and the transition process but I am still not allowed to leave the town in which I live. Inter-provincial travel will be the last restriction to be lifted and not until 30th June at the earliest.

I haven't seen that reported anywhere else yet, so I'm just hoping that it is SkyNews creating a story. The Jubilee line would normally be far, far busier than that during the rush hour, but even so, there are far too many people travelling.

Apologies if this seems a little navel gazing, I am guessing others face this issue.

My daughter and her friends have booked a Jet2 holiday to Barcelona for mid July. They paid the deposit months ago, and Jet2 have a date of May 25th for final payment. Jet2 currently say they are flying from June 17th and thus, the holiday is still officially on.

I cant imagine there is any realistic chance of a holiday in Barcelona in mid July, really?

If the girls cancel though , they lose their deposit. Ideally they would want Jet2 to cancel it before 25th May, when they will take payment from them, and Jet2 are looking like they will stand it out and insist the holiday is ok.

Us parents have told the girls to hold it one more week and see if it does get cancelled and, if not, cancel anyway and just lose the deposit (which we will cover for them).
Anyone else face a similar dilemma?

Ah thanks, Oakie

Matt Lucas has clarified for me what Boris was saying about England. So good luck, moving forward, folk.

And for Scotland it is "Stay at hame!"

Today's dossier has a lot more detail and is significantly more optimistic than I though.
Still I see the devolved governments are trying to play politics and using different guidance.
Boris statement last night was ambiguous and slightly embarrassing.

I suspect allowing tennis in families was something that Boris pushed given he is a keen tennis player

I am no SNP supporter or generally particular liker of Nicola Sturgeon but sorry I don't see trying to politics here ( and she certainly can play the game ) on the meat of the divergencles.

I think that she knows that this is far too important a matter for that and would prefer to be on much more similar ground, with no mixed messages, as she was through the first month or so of the lockdown.

However, the sort of changes announced by Boris Johnson would be very inconsistent with the tone and expectations she has coherently set over recent weeks, and which we in Scotland will be generally much more familiar with.

These are almost entirely devolved matters and to me Sturgeon and co in Scotland are acting as they think best for the Scottish people in respect of this crisis.

Nothing from the Gov about people on visas....

Jacinda Arden (who is simply the best right now regarding leaders and covid-19) automatically gave people on a work visa an extension to September. Automatically - you didn't have to apply.

Meanwhile, UK Gov have extended visas to 31st May and you need to apply. My partner applied 2 weeks ago and has heard nothing. Can he leave the country - should he leave the country? His visa is up next week - so he would be breaching it. It's difficult getting back to NZ due to flights frequently being cancelled and/or expensive.

What happens on 31st May - is everyone just kicked out the country on expiration? Given that in Scotland the message is very much stay *home* (rather than alert) he would rather stay here but that could cause massive issues later on.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to scramble around and get my own visa to NZ in asap.

Edited to add: I'm very happy that at least Nicola Sturgeon can speak, rather than Boris who waffles. There are things you can criticise Nicola and her party for, but this situation re: covid-19 I don't think is one of them (except for locking down earlier but you could say that about a load of places).
