General football thread

The thing that makes it attractive is that to win is the aspiration of every player despite long domestic seasons. Very few (no) players are being dragged there, the contest itself initially bloated will be whittled down to the elite sporting. admittedly within the context of relative wealth of nations re facilities etc no country has overtly bought the competition most players play for their nation ie the one in which they were raised or they or their parents were born in, no SCR/PSR BS & every player will give their all to win. A paradox of commercial corruption facilitating a pure sporting contest with the caveat that professional football  played on the pitch to win, by fair means or foul.

Agreed, and Im sure Ill be up at 2 am one day watching Curacao take on Saudi Arabia or wherever it is and loving every minute! Thankfully, the England matches are on at 9pm i think, certainly decent times. Scotlands matches are less accessible, a couple in the early hours and theyll take more dedication to watch, although I will try my best!

The first Scotland match is at 2 am our time! ( hey, it's a Sunday morning, nae excuse ). The other two are at 11pm. Hope the team are awake as I see our must win vs team Haiti beat New Zealand 4-0.

Be interested to see if England can do as well against NZ tonight!

Well, England didnt despatch NZ too easily today, albeit the match was played at a very slow tempo.

I think for England it was an easy enough training exercise with 22 players getting a run out.

Scotland, though, put Bolivia to the sword and that should raise Scottish spirits!

Can we play England instead of Haiti?

Seriously, I had gathered it was a bit of a training exercise. Presumably England will exert themselves more with pretty much their intended first team in their final warm-up match vs Costa Rica.

Well, you may get the chance!

Have you tried this, great little predictor tool.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/ng-interactive/2026/jun/04/bracketology-predict-a-path-to-world-cup-victory

My prediction bracket ends up with Mexico v Scotland in the last 32 and the winner plays England in my last 16.

However, I would expect Mexico to beat both in the altitude of Aztec Stadium and see us both losing before the tournament gets interesting

Hope I am wrong

Not to mention with Rice, Saka, Madueke & Eze finally back in the squad.  wink

First time in my life I think England have taken a decent right & left back to a World Cup, two decent ball playing centre backs, three quality CDMs capable of playing a double pivot, two technically good, creative no 10s both well over 6f. One of the best CF in Europe & pace to burn on the wing.. what could possibly go wrong
