General football thread

So Australia beat Peru 5-4 on penalties (out of 6) after a 0-0 draw after ET.

Seemed Australia shaded the initial 90 minutes but Peru hit the post in ET.

I watched the penalty shootout and was distinctly unenamoured by the Aussie goalkeeper, very little international experience, who replaced their main goalkeeper and captain just before the end of ET. I've no idea about his penalty saving record

Anyway he did this stupid energetic dance up and down his line before seemingly always reverting to the middle just before the kick, to my mind just making himself unprepared for any decent penalty taker who just focused on picking his spot.

Meantime the Peru goalkeeper was watching, poised and ready and saved the very first penalty . Peru then hit the post with their 3rd. And finally goddammit the Aussie dancer saved the final one to win the match and send Australia to the World Cup. And he stood there like the conquering hero.

They are into Group D with France, Denmark and Tunisia

I actually, whisper it, quite like the Aussies, indeed Aussies in general. I just took a dislike to the goalkeeper lol

To be fair same here. I always had a liking for Aussie Rules and used to enjoy it when Channel 4 showed it, shame we dont get to see any these days, at least not on channels I watch

I see that Costa Rica are fairly strong betting favourites vs New Zealand, which is what I expected.

But maybe New Zealand can beat them, unlike Scotland and England in past World Cups

Spurs just signed our best player Bissouma. They are looking very strong for next season.

Have to be honest, this whole 'Nations League' seems pointless to me, especially at the end of a long season.

I agree with that - I felt for Ukraine, Wales, Scotland who played massive World Cup matches and then had to play loads

of nations league.

Yay, Armenia 1 Scotland 4. We're back

I tend to agree with quite a few folk I have heard saying the Nations League has actually in general perhaps been better than folk first expected. But the timing of this group of matches is awful.

Re Ukraine, I still mainly feel sorry for them that they had to play back to back World Cup play-off games and Wales ( and in particular Bsle and Ramsey ) didn't, because their SF vs Austria was played as originally scheduled in March.

And Costa Rica claimed the final World Cup Finals place after beating New Zealand 1-0.

Group E for them along with err Spain, Germany and Japan.
