General football thread

I am sure some people will be critical of England's style of play in trying to pass it out from the back and the consequential errors that occurred this evening, but let's not forget, we were a Jesse Lingard toenail away from winning 2-1 in the 90 mins.

I can tell you after years of watching Lewis Dunk I have never seen him make errors like we saw tonight. Stones was a joke.

Some really sad news today from the world of football. Former Spurs player and FA Cup winner Justin Edinburgh died today at just 49 years old. Last season he was manager of Leyton Orient, and guided them back into the football league.

Life is just so cruel and unfair sometimes.

Flippin heck !!!!

The Scotland women's world cup team decided tonight in one swell swoop to surpass the whole history of the men's team at how to screw up in finals.

3-0 up to Argentina with 20 minutes to go. Decent chance of being one of the best 4 thirds to then progress to the L16 just with a win but also helping their GD was increasing their chances.

The rest - watch it, read about it and weep !

Benitez unsurprisingly leaving Newcastle. Great, pretty much confirms we'll always be a '17th is a success' club while Ashley is around.

So Rafa gone as you say Ace. Names being linked include Dyche, Gerrard, Mourinho, Chris Houghton again. Cant see why Jose would be interested, Gerrard would seem to have more to prove and do at Rangers but then may look at Lampard and Chelsea and feel he should make a big move. Dyche may be ready for a step up in club size, whether Mike Ashley would be to his liking, the sale of the club seems to have stalled/gone quiet again.

Could VAR ruin football? Probably not for those sitting watching at home, but a different story at the ground?

I was at BHA v West Ham on Saturday. After the opening day 3-0 win obviously there was a great atmosphere at the start of the match. After dominating the first 30 minutes, our exciting new signing scores a great volley to put us 1 up. Cue crowd going crazy. Players went back ready for kick-off, no protests from anyone.
No announcements or anything. About a minute after goal I then said to my Son I bet they are checking the goal as you could tell from Ref's stance, no others around me had noticed. Sure enough 'Goal review' came up on screen and 30 seconds later it was disallowed, and ref ran back with ball to penalty area.

I had to text my nephew to find out why it was disallowed!!

Now if linesman had raised his flag at time fair enough (and it was marginally offside). But atmosphere was killed dead for a few minutes, and obviously Hammers fans were jubilant.
If goal is being checked it needs to be communicated much better, and just keep ball in penalty area until decision made. It got to the stage where we didnt fully celebrate the equaliser as it looks as though that might be reviewed too...still don't know if it was.

To add to the bad feeling in crowd a clear pull on a Brighton shirt happened in box and ref refused to look at it..I mean whats the point if all you are going to do is just try and find a way to disallow goals.

Rant over!

The problem is, and its gone on for years, is that football is tailored for the TV experience not the attending supporters. There are loads of examples of this from games that attending fans cannot get back from, to the loss of Saturday 3pm kick offs and so on. The only people who tend to benefit from these things are the TV audience, for those that like the experience of attending live its a very different thing.

Yes true. Just look at 12.30 game on Sky. Sunderland v Portsmouth hardly fair on away fans?

Anyone else think a chance was missed in Bulgaria last night? England got a lot of plaudits for how they responded to the abuse, but it was evidently carrying on throughout. I think tjet should have forced UEFA and walked off. Yes, they might not have been supported but some things are bigger than points in football. Walking off in the face of nazism would have been the right thing.

Rock and a hard place I know, and I like southgate, sterling, mings and others , all bright and decent guys. But chance missed.
