The league cup run finished in an epic semi. Villa produced one of their finest ever Villa its the hope that kills you moments 3-0 down at Prenton Park we scored in the final minutes to bring it back to 3-1. Set up an epic second leg and Mark Bosnichs (likely pharmacologically enhanced for all the wrong reasons) finest moment in Claret and Blue.

Remarkable final featuring Utds own coke machine Lee Sharpe in which Cantona was shackled by arguably the greatest functioning alcoholic to play football, and a five-man midfield containing Graham Fenton (who? He now manages the best team on Tyneside) with the winning goal earnt by a guy who later died as a result of being tasered by police (RIP Dalian Atkinson)

Didn't realise they got to the SF in 1994 - that's probably my first year of actually just about being into football as a very young lad. I think I can remember Atkinson scoring in the final, but for Tranmere to get to the LC SF in 1994, final in 2000, and 3 FA Cup QF between 2000 and 2004 is pretty good going and does stick in the memory a bit, so for them to in non league for a few seasons, and even the 4th tier, does seem a bit strange to me.

They thoroughly deserved that. I have had the good fortune to see them 5-6 times this year. Lee Bowyer has them playing really good football, constantly moving the ball and making the opposition work so hard without the ball, stifled a bit today by the occasion and the poor start but a vast improvement on the second leg against Doncaster where they scored early then froze.

Best performance I have seen this season from Pratley and his tag teaming with Johnny Williams worked really well giving them a extra bit of juice after the switch.

There is of course the Scottish Premiership play-off too and I certainly have a wish for that.

Saints please !!!!!!!!!!!

The first leg was tonight. Dundee United 0 St Mirren 0, a rather frenetic affair in front of 11,000 spectators. The return leg is on Sunday afternoon so no rest for the wicked or the Saints.

Saints are now unbeaten in 7 having woken up belatedly or rather some decent January additions have been gelling much more. Been playing decently for a team facing a for them relegation play-off.

I'm up in Aviemore this week doing some walking in between the showers. Back in Edinburgh on Saturday but I suspect I've left it too late to get a ticket for Paisley on Sunday. Will check out for sure tomorrow.

Congratulations but how the hell do you win a penalty shootout 2-0 (especially against Scottish goalkeepers)!

Thanks. The penalty shootout was most entertaining from the off.

Don't know about Scottish goalkeepers but our Czech one saved 3 penalties in the shootout ( OK too of these penalties were wretched snd one was just bad ) and United hit the post with a 4th. Their Swiss keeper ( who pulled off some great saves during the match ) didn't save any as we only had to take 3 and the one we missed hit the post.

The United manager, Robbie Neilson, talked beforehand about practicing penalties. But that was not at the baying St Mirren end with even ball boys getting strangely agitated at each United effort.

May things be a bit less frought for Seagulls snd Saints next season.

Staying up, staying up, staying up  biggrin

Reports suggesting Newcastle have been sold for £350m to either the cousin or half brother of Man City's owner.

Watching champions league final from USA. Bt sport presentation and commentary, but some clueless Americans at half time. Liverpool controlling. Possession stats in spurs favour but liverpool controlling game

Pressing high, spurs stifled. Robertson is a good player. Man of match so far

Congrats to both teams really on terrific seasons. Didn't really have a favourite this evening but I do think that if a team gets 97 points in a Premier League season, they deserve some silverware. As for Spurs, if they look at where Liverpool were this time last year and compare it to tonight, I am sure they can take inspiration from that, although it won't seem so at the moment.

Yes difficult to begrudge Liverpool although I would have preferred a Spurs win.

As Jon indicated a very controlling performance by Liverpool in the first half and most of the second half until Spurs really upped things because they had to and fashioned but snatched at some chances.

At least it will maybe shut up some radio presenters and pundits suggesting that Liverpool and Klopp would have been failures if they had lost the CL final and even that Chelsea would have had a better season. Absolute nonsense but guess they get plenty bites from folk phoning and texting to disagree.

Fine margins. Pleased to see Liverpool win but a dire game of football ruined by the early penalty. If you stick your hand up in the box your asking for it, ie someone has to make a decision which can go either way. Spurs have done do well to get where they are ie champions league final, superb stadium and solvent.

Yes, dire indeed. I couldn't help thinking the whole of Europe must have been watching, thinking, how on earth did we get beaten by these teams????

But I was pleased Liverpool won, and - overall - they deserved it.

See , strangely I didn't see it as dire. Liverpool got early goal and then just did what was needed . Spurs had little imagination. Kane was a mistake, players seldom come back from a big lay off and make an impact.

Biggest issue though was nearly 3 weeks since they both last played, that must have caused an impact on the players and their sharpness, negatively

Yay to the Premier League and FA, other countries had noted how late the European finals were and consequently their leagues and cups completed later. Guess it was lucky that both finals were all English so if this was a handicap, it was the handicapped vs the handicapped.

Yes I didn't see it as dire but certainly disappointing as an event and tellingly it after a time failed to truly hold the attention of the group I was watching it in the pub with. Liverpool largely controlled, Spurs largely didn't turn up.
