Yes, his story is inspiring. And, as you say, there are many people behind the scenes who have obviously been SO important, and self-sacrificing.

Just to repeat the original info:

"Playing tennis at such a high level has taken a lot of hard work and commitment from Paul; this has been particularly difficult given his home circumstances. Sadly Paul lost both parents when he was very young, he has been raised by his grandmother, Val from the age of 4. Paul and Val live in a council house in East Hull, Vals only income being her state pension. Paul has 3 aunts and uncles who are very supportive but all work fulltime and have young families which mean that they cannot always assist with his tennis. Pauls training at Nuffield is heavily subsidised and he has been receiving funding from Yorkshire LTA to go towards the costs of competing. Without this help it would not have been possible for Paul to reach the high playing standard he has achieved."

This is from a local solicitors, Williamsons, who funded him £500 and deserve some credit.

As do the Yorkshire LTA.

And Hull CIty Council, the LTA and the Friends of Pelican Park (Jan HOrnby, Chair) for saving four local courts (just minutes from where Paul lived) from closure, and put in floodlights, new surfaces, new booking system and kept them going, and made them possible to play, even when dark or wet.   

But the coaches are the main unsung heroes. Jonny Carmichael sounds like a brilliant man. Kudos to him. As does the team at Hull:

Jonny has always had faith in me. Hes paid out of his own pocket to send me to competitions in the past. The whole team at the Nuffield Health Tennis Academy and my fitness coach, Aaron in the gym have been amazing, I cant thank them enough.

The US Game**** coach, Goffi, also should get a lot of praise. He was in London, checking out players when a friend told him to go to Hull. He saw what many of us had seen, a "young, skinny kid with great balance and coordination".  But the main thing was: The determination in his eyes and what he was telling me, Goffi said. Hes like, Im telling you right now, if I have the same opportunities as the other people around me, I will be the best. And so they 'took a chance' on him. 

That's the key phrase, really - if I had the same opportunities.....

 

 

Thank you for posting this CD.  It truly is an inspiring story.  I wonder how many other Paul Jubbs there are out there who could achieve so much more given better support and opportunity.

Brilliant news and so well done for Paul... and all those that have backed him over the years and given him that chance, including at college. I really do hope he will receive the support now to go onto a pro career, at whatever stage he decides to do that, whether he completes college or not (which it would be good if he could).

Fantastic achievement:0) Pauls atypical tennis background probably has a lot to do with his success - nothing has been handed to him on a plate. Have said before the LTA should means test funding so it goes where it is most needed......really hope they step up and give Paul the support he obviously deserves!!

 ... and it is the LTAs job to do this. If not for some inspirational people around him, Mr Jubb may well have been missed, but the LTA still expect candidates to get to them, somehow. Their self-satisfied response to Mr Evans latest rant is telling in this regard.

 

The LTA is committed to opening tennis up and making every stage of being an aspiring pro more accessible. For example, our National Academies will dramatically reduce the cost for our highest potential juniors and we subsidise the coaching of more than 2,000 children at local and another 220 at regional player development centres

Nothing new to us, since it's all available in that college article, the place I got the past NCAA info from and the back-story near the top of this thread - the last phrase of "Brought up by his grandmother after both his parents died when he was a young child, Jubb has emerged as an interesting prospect, previously known only to the cognoscenti of British tennis." gets close to acknowledging the latter but it's good to see it all being brought together in an article lots of people are likely to read.

One would hope the LTA step up and offer Paul some opportunities, hitting with the DC team, Qualifying wild cards for Wimbledon and Queens etc... assuming it fits with his college commitments. As mentioned earlier looking at the opportunities that Rybakov (TCU) the losing semi finalist got last Autumn to step up to challenger level one would hope the LTAx would attempt to offer some parity. Undoubtedly being current NCAA champion will set him apart from other overseas player when tournaments are thinking about wildcards in US challengers.

Big fan of Evos but he is the antithesis of Paul and got every opportunity which facilitated a very good junior career. Paul is an exception in that most families who exist on a month by month cash economic who gave athletic kids generally gravitated to playing football where the best will get excellent technical training at little or no cost . To be frank given the massive difference in capacity to earn money it would be doing such children a massive disservice to direct them towards tennis as things stand unless they are well supported or it is their vocation if they are an outstanding athlete.

The daily mail article comments on Paul that the NCAA winner normally gets a us open wild card , but as hes not American that may not apply. But the article goes on to suggest a Wimbledon wild card could be looked at. Paul has shown mentally he could cope with that, not sure if school allows but playing some British grass events, maybe challengers in Manchester and ilkley and Wimbledon qualies would be great

Yes, I last week said that surely if the relevant folk were awake then a WC to the Wimbledon Q WCs should be there for Paul ( I'm not sure how his ITF ranking points would stack up re possible play-off direct entry but I suspect short ).

But actually he really shouldn't have to bother with these play-offs. I don't see enough strong contendors that should deny him a straight qualifying WC, especially if you consider the 4 GB juniors that got Q WCs last year. Older yes but with what he had previously achieved over a short period on the pro circuit and now his outstanding college record a Q WC would be absolutely appropriate. I can't imagine him getting a MD one though some may feel that there is a case even for that.

Do I assume that Paul would not be eligible for prize money if he takes a WC because it would affect his student status ?

Student tennis players can win into $10000 in tennis,but not sure over what period etc. If you take off expenses etc. That can reduce quite quickly. I suppose like in golf the amateurs dont get prize money scenario may be appropriate?

Thanks Bob, it's a great read, and easy to access through the twitter link. He's really done well by way of Josh Goffi. They've obviously formed an extremely productive partnership based on a lot of trust.

And it looks very much as though he intends to see out his remaining year at SC, which I think is a good idea to finish his course too.
