Brexit

Tory MP and former government minister George Eustice, 'lamb'basting the trade deals with Australia and New Zealand - as reported by Lewis Goodall in this thread.

https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1592208294684557312

"I no longer have to put such a positive gloss on what was agreed...the Australia deal is not actually a very good trade deal for the UK."

"Overall the truth of the matter is that the UK gave away far too much for far too little in return."

"In my view the best clause of this treaty we have with Australia, is the final clause, because it does gives any UK govt...an unbridled right to terminate and renegotiate the FTA at any time with just six months notice."

Not sure whether to laugh or cry at this one.

At the weekend, GB News ran their own Brexit poll on Twitter. They thought they were winning but once the 'catchment audience' stretched beyond their own viewers, they were beaten. Here is the result.

https://twitter.com/GBNEWS/status/1594205004227047424

When they were about to announce the result of their poll, they didn't realise until the last second, that they had actually lost the vote.

https://twitter.com/MattLCapon/status/1594369207612891137

The reaction of Martin Daubney is priceless.

And now, to cap everything off, they have decided to RE-RUN the poll today to ensure that there was no interference. To quote them:

Referencing GBNews Poll on BREXIT. For the avoidance of doubt, and bots, could we do a quick retake on this one?

https://twitter.com/CarolineCoramUK/status/1594698887285047299

So apparently you ARE allowed to keep re-running a vote until you get the result you want, despite what they have been telling us for the last 6 years.

Hysterical biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

This isn't the most serious in the list of major Brexit-caused disasters, but as it's directly linked to tennis, I thought I'd put up the blog from one UK parent:

realitytennis.wordpress.com/2022/12/08/brexit/

As said, it doesn't really compare with the fact that (taken at random) (a) we used to be Germany's 5th trading partner, and now we're outside the top 10, that (b) since doing our 'amazing' bilateral trade deal with Japan (which was actually slightly worse than the exisitng pan-EU deal with Japan) we now are exporting less to Japan than we were when in the EU, whereas EU trade with Japan is growing, or that, more personally, (c) my sister who worked for a large language school in the UK, with many sites, has seen the company basically fold as all students are now going to Dublin, or another close family member who works for a Japanese company that uses/used London as its European base are now winding London down to 2 men and a dog and moving it all over to Amsertdam.

However, the tennis travel side is interesting.....

ADD: And I see the Emily Appleton has also said how difficult it makes things:

TeamApples

@TeamApples99
Its incredibly frustrating and has a huge impact on players wanting to train in warmer climes, and on clay or players who cannot afford to travel to US, Far East etc

In 2022, a total of 45,728 asylum seekers crossed the Channel in 1,104 boats

According to the Home Office's own website:

"There were 28,526 people detected arriving on small boats in 2021. This compares with 8,466 in 2020, 1,843 in 2019 and 299 in 2018."

www.gov.uk/government/statistics/irregular-migration-to-the-uk-year-ending-december-2021/irregular-migration-to-the-uk-year-ending-december-2021

So, since Brexit, the numbers have risen by about by a multiple of about 150 times

Just shows what happens when the UK is no longer part of the EU's Dublin III Agreement

And moreover, as with the customs union etc, Britain could still have remained part of the Dubin Agreement even after leaving the EU. We could have been like Norway or Switzerland.

But the Tory government deliberately chose not to. Because it would be seen as being too cooperative, too in the EU's pocket.

And so we now have 45,000 extra immigrants that we wouldn't have had otherwise.

Which, if your whole soapbox was that we needed to withdraw from the EU to control your borders, is just too ironic for words....

Not exactly Brexit related, but I see Croatia has joined the Euro zone and Schengen as of today. At least if I ever go back to Umag for some more tennis, I won't have to ask people what the name of the currency is.

These Brexit supporting politicians never cease to amaze me. Here is Ian Duncan Smith being interviewed about the collapse of Britishvolt.

twitter.com/TheNewsAgents/status/1615713117069008897

A summary of what he says.

1) Britishvolt failed because of Brexit
2) Large business of this nature need scale and a huge market
3) We have left the SM and we are not going back
4) Things will be more 'uphill' outside the SM
5) People will just have to 'run harder'.

An open and frank admission that he what he campaigned for is detrimental to big business and a huge disincentive to inward investment. Yet he seems to still feel it is the right decision.

Bonkers.

As for what went on in the HoC today in the debate over the REUL bill, I'll save that rant for another day.

I expect you saw the Telegraph, Bob....

Boris Johnson's old newspaper and supposedly his favourite

Previously a VERY firm supporter of Brexit

Which has now been told by its owner that actually it's a nightmare (he's seen his business interests go down the toiler since Brexit, seemingly) and someone has to point it out, so the Telegraph ran the Op Ed of:

Britain will join the EU far earlier than anyone thought
It is the Tories' greatest betrayal - they have made such a hash that it is now unsalvageable.

Even The Telegraph calls it the elephant in the room.....

the whole one comes up if I press the link on the one above

digitaleditions.telegraph.co.uk/data/1219/reader/reader.html?#!preferred/0/package/1219/pub/1219/page/55/article/NaN

PS How Ian Duncan Smith can say that with a straight face just does my head in

So, the Conservative Minister for Exports has said that new figures show that the value of UK exports will now not meet the much-heralded £1trn mark until 2035.
This was previously 2020, then 2030 and now 2035.
This has been blamed on Brexit, with the huge increase in admin/border checks/custom point problems/lack of mutual recognition and other trade barriers, meaning that one in eight small exporters is now no longer exporting to the EU (and has no other market to take that order book), the lack of new trade deals of any size or signifance, as well as inflation and exchange rates

A poll from Omnisis is now showing a 26 point lead for Rejoin over Stay out - if you ignore the 'don't knows'.

Rejoin : 63%
Stay Out : 37%

Yes, and when you actually listen to the guy who - as you say - actually runs a chemical manufacturing company, not spouts political drivel - it's not just that it's costing him £155k per year extra at the moment, just to standstill and be where he was in terms of data access, compliance etc before Brexit

BUT, he says, under the government's new proposal of doing our own version of chemical regulations, taking control of our own rules etc, it will cost him £1.6m as a one-off - for nothing - that will put him out of business completely.

Anyone else see the irony in Boris Johnson saying that once the war between Ukraine and Russia is over, Ukraine should join the EU.

Apparently once they have secured their sovereignty from Russian invasion, they should then give it up again.

The irony of Boris telling us to leave and telling them to join is delicious .

The FT assessment that just about says it all (runs for about 28 minutes).
