British Tour 2018

My normal link to the British Tour page no longer works. I have a downloaded copy of the calendar though, which has links to the individual tournaments. I have got to the Tunbridge Wells tournament, and can only see today's QF results, not the SF which should have been played this afternoon. And the women's only has three QF results.

The semis saw Rob Carter defeat James Mackinlay in two sets, and Ben Jones defeat Michael Shaw in three.

So it's Rob v Ben in the final.

At the British Tour Cumberland event (which somehow is in London.....for geographically challenged people like me this is even more confusing.....), the semis were:

[1] Mike Shaw def. (q) Michael Jalpota 6-2 6-3

[7] George Davies def. [6] Matt Summers 3-6 6-3 6-1

The Cumberland Club is just off Finchley Road, not far from Hampstead to the north west and Maida Vale to the south east. They have 12 courts, 5 hard, 3 clay and 4 grass, with another 8 at a different site.

No idea. But it has been there for over 120 years, so perhaps some historical connection ? Nothing to do with the location. I have an historical map of the area dating from 1920, but there are no clues there.

My guess is from the Duke of Cumberland which was a title held by members of the Hanover royal family which lost their ancestral lands when Germany was unified but obviously still had family members in the British royal family. The last Duke died in 1923.

 Impressed smile

Was that Duke based up in the North-West too? i.e. we've got Cumberland up there and remnants down here?

Meanwhile, congrats to Mike Shaw

FINAL: Mike Shaw def. George Davies 6-3 6-2

they were ruling the lands of Hanover while their cousins were ruling us but after unification they had no power and the last of them had the title taken away after he'd supported Germany in WW1

so only northwest Germany

The Tier 1 event at Paddington (a more sensible name for a London club ) sees top-1000 player Samm Butler taking part, as well as top-1400 player, Sean Hodkin. Ben Jones who will be ATP ranked next week is also in the draw.
