Yes.  I had to think about that one as well.  I think Miriambee thought your "I doubt he will win it comment" related to this weeks tournament rather than the Most Improved Player award.

Great post thanks. Freddie is the man definitely to help Kyle grow through the next few years. Real insight as you say as to why he performed as he did at various times. Lets hope he stays fit and begins to hone in on the top 5 in 2019

With his QF this week he has live retained his current under 23 #6 ranking, behind only A Zverev, Kyrgios, Rublev, Coric and Khachanov and within 50 points of both Coric and Khachanov. By the fact that he is turning 23 clearly he is older than the 5 above him and these behind him, some by quite a bit. But it is still pretty good and he held off his immediate pursuer, young Shapovalov, with his win against him this week. Kyle turned 24 on 8th January.

Just over a year ago, as above, in the last rankings before he turned 23 he was #6 U23 behind Zverev, Kyrgios, Rublev, Coric and Khachanov and I reckoned that it would probably need a very good year for him to be at least #6 U24 a year later.

Well, in these last rankings before his birthday he was #4 U24 ( and overall WR 14 ), now behind just Zverev, Khachanov and Coric. And overall it was indeed a very good year, begun with the surge of his Aus Open SF and with other high and lower spots, not helped by some illness issues, hopefully got to the bottom of late in the year. He especially improved in the mix some things I wanted to see improved such as presence and winning matches that went 3 sets against top 50 players so I hardly moaned or criticised Kyle at all in the last year and so escaped Oakland's wrath  

In 2018 he had his 4 highest ranking wins including 2 top 10 wins, topped by Dimitrov WR 3 in the Aus Open QF and twice as many top 50 wins (14) as he managed in each of the previous 2 years. A top 50 14-12 record compared with 7-19 in 2017.

Now all the best for 2019 and I wonder what # U25 he will be just before his 25th birthday as he pursues these above him and with young pretenders Tsitsipas and Medvedev close behind him in the overall rankings.

An early rankings fall perhaps as his Aus Open points come off, though who knows, but overall much to be hopeful about.

Yes, it is worrying.  He was tweeting pictures of himself on the exercise bike yesterday so hopefully it isn't too serious.
