Our ATP total at 02/03, aa above, is 1292, not too far away from our best recorded of 1258 at 29/01/24.
And guess what - our live rankings total right now is 1258 - with Billy in the Phoenix 175 SF and Toby in the Hersonissos 50 final.
Jack D, dropping 800 net points, is currently down 12 to live ranked 26, with Cam, up 150 net points, up 5 to live ranked 24 - clearly place movements are much smaller at the top end even with such big points movements.
The 2 who are making the big difference are Billy, currently up 13 places to live ranked 138, and Toby, up 60 places to live ranked 184, and more relevant for here right now up 18 places on Dan's WR 202 for GB #10 at 02/03. Toby is now live GB #9 and will go live GB #7 with a win in his final, from GB #13 at 02/03.
With no further GB top 10 wins, we clearly can't improve our live rankings total this week, and it looks as if we could drop a place. But just one more win from Billy or Toby and it will be a thread record ( I believe from someone's previous findings the existing thread best of 1258 is our best this century at least ).
It's looking good going forward too with our number of under 25 yos on the rise
Yay, Toby wins the Hersonissos Challenger, so we will have that new record.
Great to see, especially as I have said with so much progress still beyond our top 10 and the age profile of our players on the move.
We may have our moans over the years about British tennis ( and there have been dark times in the past ) but some things have been going very right in men's tennis over recent years! ( see also the current Wimbledon WC thread and the list of players ). Maybe some kudos to the LTA?
In contrast to the general progress of the GB men, 1802 is the worst GB women top 10 total since 1870 at 01/07/24. Our #10 is Lily WR 295
They do not compare well and also currently have nothing like the general progression in the next dozen or so that our men have.
Jodie will hopefully rise again and Hannah in time. Apart from them, maybe say such as Marni, Allcia, Ranah, Ella and Emily App can make the top 300 in the future but how much further than that I feel is very questionable. I am also struggling to see further candidates.
I accept in part the notion that success can drive success and that happening to a degree with our men. But should questions be being asked about how much our women have fallen behind and the lack of depth?
Note: I have posted this again as a thread starter in the women's section as a probably better place for any wider discussion.
