Wimbledon wildcards

I wonder if Tara would have been on anyone's MDWC list two weeks ago, yet now she is the No.1 choice - and deservedly so with her resent results. Katie Swan would have looked a very likely choice a couple of months ago but she really struggled on clay and we have not seen her on the grass yet (I still think she deserves a MDWC if fully fit as she is our most promising young player and represented us in Fed Cup). I would be shocked if Laura doesn't get a MDWC as even if the LTA decided against it the AELTC would probably award her one anyway.

QWC more of a guess (in fact a complete guess) but here goes: Freya, Katy D, Gabi, Lisa, & Sam

I wouldn't be surprised if it all looked different this time next week though.

I'd go for

MDWC

Tara
Katie S (if fit and pays some matches)
Laura - Probably shouldn't get one but we know she will.

QWC

Freya
Gabby
Katy D
Sam
Lisa/Katie B

Everyone else into the WC play-offs

I think that if the LTA can only come up with only a couple of names, then the AELTC should be seriously questioning why they are giving them £50 million per year. How many of the LTA coaching staff will be sacked as a consequence of this appalling failure?

Given the gutting of the LTA's domestic ITF calendar, the Wimbledon wildcards matter more than ever; offering most of the contenders for 2017 their only chance of getting the financial backing that has seen Naomi and Jo make such strides in the last year.

If I were the AELTC, I would ignore the LTA's recommendations entirely; and give MDWCs to Tara, Amanda, Freya, Laura (just), Katys S+D, + Barty and Zhuk. Mostly underdog Cinderellas, but it'd liven up the first week a lot.

QWCs to Sam, Gabi, Lisa, KB, and 2 from the 3Emilys or Jodie, with a further 2 to be decided via play-offs.

I'd also want to have a damned good look at the contract between the LTA and the AELTC, and see how much money I could not hand over, and start looking for another organisation to run UK ITFs with it in future years.

Lisa/Sam/Emily App/Jodie this is an incredibly difficult choice - whoever shows the best form in the next few weeks I suppose.

I've omitted Gabi from the list because she's been given 2 QWCs the previous 2 years and I'd hope she'd come through the play offs. I wish they could make more QWCs available. cry
I don't think any British player deserves a MDWC apart from Tara. Even then she has been given 2 before and did amazingly well but on both occasions perhaps didn't take her chances and make full use of it, so they might be a bit wary.
Laura definitely doesn't deserve one and at this point it would be just aiding her stagnation.
Katie S has been in poor form all year and has done nothing particularly of note to credit one.
Freya's performance this week shows she's not ready.
I don't see how Mandy could get a QWC never mind a MDWC when she's shown no interest in taking part in the grass season.

I think instead of handing out more MDWCs they should just let the next highest ranked player in as a direct acceptance. Unless Ash Barty and any other international player that hasn't made the MD by rank does anything particularly special, such as winning or being runners up to one of the WTA grass events then they don't deserve one in my opinion.

I would say that Freya's performance in the doubles shows that she was finding her feet at WTA level and I would give her a MDWC.

While I think that Katie S. should probably get a QWC, I think it is a bit harsh to say her form has been poor all year.  A rough month on clay recently yes, but good performances in Fed Cup, several top 200 wins and some other close ones.

She earned the first of those QWC by coming through the play-offs and then went on to win a round so I'd give her another one this year, particularly as she's made such good progress having come back from a long term injury.

Qualifying starts 20th June, and the main draw is on 24th June - so time is running out. Even next week might be too late to change things

The initial qualifying WCs will also be announced in the first half of next week so that the remaining possibke contending Brits know that they have to head for the qualifying WC play-offs.

Does anybody know what day the first batch of wildcards will be announced? Was it the Tuesday of this week this time last year? Thx

It was June 17th last year, which was the Wednesday of the week of the Birmingham WTA event.

Need to announce soon, so entries for playoffs can be sorted. Emily Appleton, Sam Murray will still be at Ilkley on Wednesday.

I do seem to recall they didn't exactly leave much time last year so I was already thinking it had been Wednesday last year so I guess could well be again.

Announcing on Tuesday would help many players know sooner how they stand and arrange / prepare accordingly. Empathy you know.

Yes, I remember it being very last minute last year too.

Although that's the 'official' announcement.

And I'm pretty sure that if Emily App, for instance, has a wildcard entry, she'll know in advance.

As said, Laura D. has tweeted that she's playing. But she'll get in on ranking (almost certainly).
