Rio Olympics 2016

Don't think we've mentioned Nick Skelton's gold - good for us oldies that a 58-year-old did that :)

btw I searched the site for Skelton and got 3 hits which I couldn't find "Skelton" - maybe one of you could test/fix this

Yes, great to have a gold medalist that is older than mewink

Anyway after my false start last night GB have now surpassed their total in London and become the first team to win more medals at the games after their home games.

Great run by Mo, he is simply unbeatable "Arise Sir Mo" indeed.biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

What an amazing fortnight!
Well done Team GB - we are so proud of you all!

As a slight aside - does anyone know why they have preliminaries and SF in the diving and not a straight final?

Yes, think you may have it, Helen. I had certainly wondered about the 3 stages. 2 stages seemed perfectly understandable to fix a specific limited number for the final, but I wondered about say for the men's springboard going down to the top 18 for a SF and then 12 of these 18 for the final.

Consistent Tom Daley wasn't - first to last and so missed the final.

They don't carry any scores forward so the winners are those that produce on the final day, but all have previously twice performed their series of dives to a good consistent level. Seems reasonable.

Ah ok thanks - that makes sense - though a real shame from GB point of view this time!

Apparently it is now official that we will finish 2nd in the medal table ahead of the Chinese. They have only one more person competing and that is not enough to overtake us regardless of the result. Of course, we also have one more medal guaranteed in the boxing which will either be Gold or Silver.

A remarkable achievement from the GB participants. SPOTY team of the year is a no brainer.

Surely they will split the SPOTY team award into sports, with Hockey top of the list at the moment.

The women's hockey team were amazing, they weren't I don't think the most talented team in it but had bought into the team ethic in a way I don't think I have seen before. Some fantastic role models and I don't think I have ever seen a group of fitter women.

I did get an inkling from a surbiton HC coworker that (and that Maddy was on fire) this was the case and although she wouldn't say it felt we might go all the way.

Some truely amazing performances, Mo Farah nearly polished me off just watching him (need to get back to normal sleep patterns pronto!)

There's going to be some very hard choices in SPOTY this year smile

How about Leicester City ?I thought they were in pole position going into the Olympics and their winning of the Premier League remains absolutely remarkable.

GB won gold medals across more sports than any other nation - 15. In comparison the USA total was 13, China 10.

Of GB's 27 gold medals, 10 were direct defences by the same individual or pair, another 7 were event defences ( of which 4 were teams including at least one repeat individual ). 10 were fresh event triumphs compared to London.

You mean like our cycling team and athletic teams? If we win DC, will be still as impressive as last year?

It seems that the first time you do something, it's taken notice of e.g. Andy winning Wimby, and then after that the same feat is not so impressive.

I'd say that other teams have achieved more than our hockey team, but the hockey team have been hyped up more. It's like Mo and Bolt got hyped up more than Kenny. (I wonder how many people are thinking 'Who's Kenny?')
