Sadly I had to undergo a 3rd operation on my hip last week. I was desperate to carry on with training but was in so much pain that surgery was unavoidable. Following the advice of the surgeon and other doctors, a decision has been made to prioritise the long term health of my hip. Where that leaves me with tennis I'm really not sure, it will depend on how things heal in the next few months. More than anything my goal is to have a happy, pain free life. This whole process has been incredibly mentally draining and I'm so grateful to the physios/family/friends that have been there to guide me through it (socially distanced of course)."

It's been over for a while really. her previous come backs have all ended in her needing to have surgery again. Hopefully she can live a pain free as far as possible life and enjoy her life outside of tennis.
Sad news for Laura. Wishing her a speedy recovery and a pain-free future. A tennis career in all probability may no longer be possible but a healthy life is more important. Best of luck.
The thing about tennis is that it is such an unnatural sport in terms of the body movements and strains. Take serving, the contortions players go through (Edberg, Henman, remember how they served) puts such pressure on the back, hips, shoulders, arms, neck, it is amazing more players dont get career impacting injuries. Backhands , particularly double handed ones on the upper torso, the back and hips and shoulders again. Single handed backhands are more natural but double handed require any extra unnatural stretch with the second hand/arm. And then the physical movements of stop start running on HARD courts in particular with no or little give in many of the surfaces (grass and clay clearly more natural) must put a lot of pressure on.
Even at this stage she doesn't want to abandon all hope of playing again, which is to her credit even if it seems pretty unrealistic to everyone else.
She should be able to announce it herself (even if it wouldn't be a surprise to anyone) that she is retiring rather than a journo.
Some players never officially announce their retirement but just quietly fade away. At the top level of the game I don't think Monica Seles ever officIally announced her retirement. More recently I think the same applied to Mirjana Lucic and Jelena Jakovic. However I do agree that it is up to the player to announce their retirement and not the press making retirement hints as Mike Dickson and Simon Briggs have done today, At least Mike Dickson's main article is about Arthur Fery.

Safina and Jamie Hampton were other ones who either didn't announce anything or did it many years later (I think Safina may have only confirmed it last year or in 2019)
But Laura is a real social media lady, so it probably matters more to her how it is put across.
For me, I was like, "why's she care that some journalist has tweeted something that gives a slightly wrong impression, she can still retire on her own terms, he doesn't speak for her, there are tons of people tweeting tons of stuff out there, just ignore them"
But I realise that she probably wouldn't see it that way.

As regards social media Laura has more folowers on twitter than any other British female tennIs player ever. Laura has more than double Heather's and more than 3 times Jo's.

Could someone please explain why number of social media followers mean anything?

I am not an expert, but doesnt number of followers link to the sponsors and commercial orgs out there being able to monetise that so that the more followers you have, the more your content is seen and the more you are able to charge fees for commercial aspects of that, effectively being like an influencer - sponsorship, product placement.
Without monetising it though, it is just a number and probably means little apart from some sort of popularity contest!

Like Andy Murray I think (despite her lengthy injury problems) she simply wants to keep playing if she possibly can.
I think Laura has always been serious about rehabbing and returning to playing. Because she's used a lot of social media and done some TV & Radio presenting shouldn't detract from that. It's tough to have been through this much physical hardship and not have the career and income you were expecting. I wish her well whatever the outcome.
