If that's true and comes to pass, it would be a huge pity, particularly given that I have no sense that otherwise Jo would not want to continue competing for a long while yet.

We've had one or two posts along the lines of why does she not just give up/retire which, while that may be what she ends up having to do, I thought were at best a bit unnecessary while she was still wanting to compete. Something rather just to be left to her and her team, with much fuller knowledge of the injury details and her own mindset.

My concern for Jo's medium-term future in the game has less to do with the injuries and more to do with the fact that she's chosen not to appoint a new coach (so far). I know Dan is still working with her but I don't think he was announced as a full-time coach unless I missed it somewhere. The appointment of a new coach would end speculation and signal a real go at 2022.

Maybe speculation but I've heard it or read it at least 5 times since May about Jo retiring soon. . She started off with problems in right knee and now has problems in her left knee /thigh. She actually played 7 matches at Nottingham and since then has barely played. She pulled out of the US Open at a very late stage having cut short her practice session the day before. She has been struggling with her right knee for 2 years for a condition that doesn't look like that it can be improved by an operation. A new coach was mentioned by Annie K. and Sam but they wondered if she really needed one. I know they always have hitting partners. She is 30 and not an improving player. I would be more concerned about who is coaching Emma, Fran, Jodie, Harriet and Katie B. Jo's retirement when ever it is will leave a big void. However we have Emma on the scene now to fill some of the void.

I'm most concerned about Jo's state of mind. She was in such good, fighting spirit in Nottingham, happy and still believing she was in with a chance at Wimbledon:

Since then Jo's had so many knocks at a time when she's been regaining form on court.

I've been wondering if Jo might be helping Dan launch himself into a coaching career by giving him a bigger role within her team. Annie K has mentioned before in commentary that Dan would have learnt a lot from working with Jo's coaches.

It could well be the case. After Jo he could to work with other top players. A couple of the British coaches have gone on to work with foreign players and done well in their coaching careers. Thinking of Tom with Maria Sakkari and Andrew with Elina Svitolina.

In an article about Emma for The Guardian, Tumaini Carayol mentions that Jo held the British no 1 for 310 weeks before Emma took over.

That's a great achievement by Jo. She has done so well to be GB #1 for so long and in global ranking and tournament terms over many years. And while she has had injuries issues so inhibiting her in defending points ( and these remain such a concern for her future in tennis ) it is great that there has been such a hugely positive movement by the new #1 Emma with her already verging on the top 50.

The baton is passed from one very worthy GB #1 to what is looking a very worthy successor.

I thought at the time it was reported as a left thigh issue which prevented her playing in the US Open. Sadly I think Jo's season finished when she won Nottingham. She has only played 3 matches in the only 2 tournaments she has played since then.. After 2 wins in Montreal she gave a walkover to Coco Gauff.She had a first round defeat in Cincinnati and withdrew from another 8 tournaments. She will be out of the top 100 at the end of 2021. Sadly just too many injuries and Covid. At this stage in her career I can't see her going through 2 or 3 rounds of qualifying to get into a main draw. .

The last match she played, she was No.36, it's possible that she could wait 6 months and get a PR but it would mean missing the Australian Open but she may end up missing it anyway if she is ranked too low for DA.
