RE: Winning streaks

Elena Baltacha currently on 10 match win streak. 1 25K title, 1 75K title. Just a shame it's the Clay next. furious

On the ITF's player of the month feature for March, which was of course about our old friend and Brit-killer Rui Machado, they mentioned that his winning streak was the 6th longest ever in Futures main draws.

You can't tell us that and leave us hanging as to who the top 5 are, I thought, so I emailed them and asked and got an impressively quick reply. Well, 2nd-5th are not much higher than Machado's streak, but the all-time record is an astonishing 39-match winning streak by Eduardo Schwank.

"Here is the data you enquired about. As you can see, all the winning
streaks have now come to an end with the exception of Konstantinos
Economidis, who has not played a Futures match since his last Futures
win.

All Time Top 10 players Futures Singles Maindraw win streak

Pos. Player Nation Wins Win streak ongoing
1 Schwank, Eduardo (ARG) 39 N
2 Rusevski, Predrag (MKD) 27 N
3 Lee, Hyung-Taik (KOR) 26 N
4 Economidis, Konstantinos (GRE) 25 Y
5 Rojer, Jean-Julien (AHO) 24 N
6= Machado, Rui (POR) 23 N
6= Rascon-Lope, Juan-Luis (ESP) 23 N
6= Recouderc, Laurent (FRA) 23 N
6= Trimmel, Clemens (AUT) 23 N
6= Villagran, Cristian (ARG) 23 N"

These streaks work slightly differently to the GB records earlier on this thread, in that qualifying wins are ignored and losses in higher-level events don't break the streak.

Schwank's streak started with him winning 2 Futures in Argentina in August 2006 then 2 more in Bolivia in September 2006. He then played Challengers for a few months, before returning to Futures in April-June 2007, winning 3 more titles in Argentina then reaching the Final in Italy where he was beaten by Prpic. His longest overall winning streak in that period was 24, made up of the first 4 Futures in 2006 plus three qualifying wins and one main draw win in the Montevideo Challenger.

I wonder what other stats like this they hold ...

Early days, but one person who may have some chance of breaking into the all time top 10 is Yuichi Sugita.

Sugita was extremely promising once but has suffered a few knocks plus loss of form. But in June, he got back his old touch as he won back to back Futures in Japan including multiple thrashings. Now he is in Indonesia for three 10Ks and his true level of tennis is much higher than anyone in those fields.

Sugita won the first Futures in style - 0 and 1 in the final. smile.gif Eight more wins and he'll be up there.

Another tournament, another title. Yuichi Sugita won Indonesia F2, his fourth title in a row and that takes his streak to 20.

Three wins in Indonesia F3 and he'll be joining the players above.

And the man Sugita beat in the final was 15-year-old Bernand Tomic... pretty good effort from him to make a futures final at 15 (although he did have a nice draw, but dropping just 4 games to the WR 535 in the semi's is very impressive)

Del Potro is up to 13 successive wins, which isn't that many, but considering they've all be at ATP level and it spans 3 tournaments, and he'd only reached 1 semi final before this run, he's finally found some form.

Yeah, Tomic's draw till the semifinals was a joke.

JMDP beat Roddick to win his third title in a row. woohoo.gifI guess he's the first person ever to win two more titles straight after his first title??

Yuichi did it. worship.gifworship.gif He now has 23 main draw wins in a row.

Hopefully he'll win two more matches here and then step up to Challengers.

Added Dan Evans' 14-match ongoing streak to the list in the second post.

Amended the second post to show Dan's completed 19-match winning streak, which beats Tigger's 16-match streak from the early 1990s and now tops the list of the longestGB winnin streaks we know of! smile.gif

So Andy's due to appear on the winning streaks table again, I guess: How many matches is it so far? 10?

Yes, he's now equalled his best ever streak from the Futures/Challenger in Spain and equalled Mottram's best GB streak at top level events, so one win would beat those records. Three more would take him level with his coach's best streak and winning the Paris title would see him overtake Tigger, but he's need to do that and reach the TMC Final without defeat to overtake Evo. (and yes, Andy is having to do it the hard way! smile.gif)

Still here - just lurking rather than posting smile.gif  Trying to keep my time spent on the board and obsessing about tennis down to a lower level.  So Steven's table and the bt.net front page are godsends, meaning I don't have to trawl through each futures result.

- and to stop the hijack: Watch out Evski, Muzza's on your back!

Added Muzza's ongoing streak into the top post and also rechecked Mark Cox's streak, which turns out to have been 12 too - Washington is shown as 5 rounds on ATP, but only the last three rounds were shown on ITF for some reason - usually ITF is more complete.
