Week 38 - WTA Premier ($799k) - Tokyo, Japan - Hard

L32: Johanna Konta WR 45 vs qualifier

Title duly amended. I can never keep the WTA tournaments straight, just give me an ATP 250, 500, Masters anyway...

Good draw for Jo first up.

Flamingowings, can you change the title to 'WTA Premier ($799k) - Tokyo, Japan - Hard'?

Thanks!

One of those 32 draw events with just 28 places and byes to the top 4 which is ridiculous. Just give those 4 places to others. The likes of Wozniacki just needs to win 3 matches to reach a premier final.

Should Jo come through it could be Stephens in the next round.

Oh sorry, flamingowings, I forgot to say keep the 'Week 38 -' in front of the rest of the title!

Can't have any complains with that draw, best option by far.

Diyas had success in Japan last year, Riske not as good away from grass, but still in the top 100. Doi/Hibino playing at home and Bouchard has been playing better recently. Dabrowski is obviously a doubles specialist and lost to the young Fernandez in Quebec earlier in the week. You'd think Jo should come through this comfortably.

Thats as good a draw for Jo as possible for a first round .

Barring the Garcia match Jos form over the US hardcourt season has been okay and much better than last year. I wonder whether she might try and schedule more 250 events for next season to help her ranking .

Theres a lot of pressure just playing the higher tier events , her confidence still isnt back to where it was early last year and going deeper in those 250s might help her to get back there.

Don't want to be a pessimist but if you look at one of the pictures on instagram of Jo practising in Tokyo she looks like she's got a strapping on her left thigh.

As a WTA Premier it's still quite a high level event and this one has 5 top 10 players in it. I kind of look on Premiers as ATP 500 equivalents and Internationals as ATP 250 equivalents. She's played quite a few Premiers but apart from the home grass season think a long time since she's played Internationals.

As has been said as a top 10 player from last year she has had extra commitments re such as the Premier 5s this year. And the Slams, Premier Mandatories and Premier 5s make up 13 events. Essentially she has rounded off her schedule with I make it 8 Premiers this year and the Nottingham International.

So maybe indeed a case for some more Internationals next year depending on how things go.

A wonderfully easy 55 pts for Jo. Sloane Stephens or Donna Vekic up next.
