Week 33 - ITF ($15K) - Gimcheon, South Korea - Hard

Don't understand this relentless globetrotting schedule. More or less been non-stop for over three months now, across three continents; one weeks rest
R32: Emily APPLETON (GBR) [1] 570 v. You-Na SUL (KOR) UNR (CH 1036, Jun. 2017)

Absolutely. She obviously knows that it is not playing matches as such that makes you improve.
So why isn't she working on improving her tennis, in blocks, and then trying it out in competition, like most players her age?

She may do well here but it's going back down to 15ks. Which is appropriate but it can't feel good......

Yes its hard to guess. But perhaps she has some targets to hit ... ranking? or tournament wins by a fixed date.

Perhaps indeed and if that were the case the combination of whoever is setting these targets and such a response would appear not to be helpful in developing her tennis longer term. Targets can be very good for many if used sensibly but there is that bigger picture.

I guess she got that first singles title as top seed in the Dublin 15K while the Woking 25K was on and she might pick up further relatively good points as top seed out here but ...

Emily is on the entry list for the next two 15ks in Korea too. It will be interesting whether she stays for either/ both of them. Whilst she stays near the top of the transition tour rankings it should make it easier for her to get into 25k tournaments next year, but at the moment, the step up in quality to the 25k level is proving challenging for her. And yes, her schedule is insane, and I hope that doesn't catch up with her too badly in terms of muscle fatigue.

The other point to note is that for most of these extensive travels over the last several months Emily has played doubles as well as singles most weeks. She continues that this week playing with Joanna Garland, a clever choice of partner for her. They are 3rd seeds in the bottom half of the draw and good for reaching the final I would have thought.

Her ranking means she can still get useful points at 15k - getting knocked out in R1 of a 25k doesn't help her. Also - winning is habit forming - good luck to Emily smile

As for globetrotting JW did alright last week lucky for us!

Able to add points at 15K and improve her ranking is not the argument and she is pretty good at beating ( often thumping ) players lower ranked than herself, and she can expect some players much lower than her in 15K draws offering questionable challenges. Although maybe in some ways that is the argument if the collecting points is to do with targets.

Ranking is more understandable for James as his general aims are more short term than Emily's should be. And development is clearly not a particular issue.

She has enough 25K+ counters to have a WTA ranking next year, so it will be her 25K+ points that determine her place on the direct acceptance list and seeding. Her 15K points will only be used to determine eligibility for a 25K reserved place, so once she is in a position to get those reserved places, additional 15K points beyond those needed to keep her among the top of the transition tour are not worth anything.

She does lose 2 of her 3 biggest 15K points by end of January so will need to replace those if she is looking to play 25K next season via the reserved places route.
