Kissell gets her first hold against Gabi, beginning of the 2nd set. Holds to love as well. Gabi needs to stay focused now and keep the door closed.

ANd now Kissell has a break point... as was saying, and takes it. Come on Gabi... 6-1 1-2*

I'm surprised she played - her serving in the tie-break of her singles looks to have been severely hampered - I think the two points she won weren't on her own serve, and she appears to have served three double faults in five service points. Hopefully a few days off will give her time to recover.

Katy's set was fairly competitive. They lost 3 deuce games on the bounce , but much better to pull out and recover for New York

After being behind 1-2*, Gabi has won four games in a row and finally does seem to have shut the door at 5-2*. To give Kissell credit though this second set has been competitive and Gabi's having to do some work for her 8 pts.

And she gets there now 6-2 6-0. Her next potential opponents are on court now, Madison Brengle and Arina Rodionova now a set apiece 7-6(3) 2-6

And whichever opponent it is, she will be about 1,000 places higher in the rankings than her opponent today...

Gabi will play 3rd seed, Brengle WR120 (CH 35), whose mothers name is Gaby.

The other 4 Brits active in singles, all play tomorrow.

Katie S is also about to start but not against Harriet 

She is playing (LL) Eri Hozumi (JPN) WR 247

Harriet & Katy D did retire in yesterday's doubles but that was assumed to be about Katy.

That's EWS and Katy D retiring in singles qualifying, Harriet & Katy D retiring from their doubles and Harriet withdrawing from her singles. May there be nothing particularly serious there. Maybe there's a bug going about.

Big shame about Harriet, thought she might have done a bit of damage this week- hope she's OK. Not scheduled to play now until US Open quals.

Naomi's first set was borderline execrable.
Amongst other things, her ball toss was really wonky, and footwork was very sparingly employed.

Picked up a bit in the second set.
