Tennis in Gunnersbury Park

Anyone for tennis in Gunnersbury Park?

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Eight new state-of-the-art tennis courts will be available to use at Gunnersbury Park from 1 August.

The new macadam courts are the first phase of the Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub which, when completed, will also include a multi-use sports centre, a gym, two external floodlit artificial grass pitches and natural grass cricket and football pitches.

The complex will be managed by charitable social enterprise GLL.

From 1 August the courts will be available to book at a cost of £9 per hour, while a range of activities, coaching and competitions will be launched over the summer.

These include a free children's summer camp for children aged five to 10 years which is funded by the John Lyon Foundation.

Regular coaching sessions on the courts will begin in September.

There will also be a dedicated Tennis Manager to look after the courts, financed by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Interesting development.  Scope for a Futures event next year?

Apparently the courts were actual completed in October 2017, but good to see them being opened to the public. Here is a little info from the contractors that built them.

And if the LTA are financing a Tennis Manager, they know the courts exist (!) and have little excuse (other than the usual ones) for not putting on a 15k there.

15ks have to have certain facilities to be suitable. I know the rules have been relaxed a little for next year, but no idea about the facilities.

Thanks for posting there are some newish courts in Ladywell Fields in deepest darkest Lewisham

The coaches there have had some success see below. Along with "Be active" who have had a long term presence in Burgess Park In Southwark, If it continues we should get some high quality athletes playing tennis the challenge is facilitating the development of good youngsters with intensive high quality coaching.

2015 has been a memorable year for Chris and Michael at South East London Tennis, culminating with Chris being presented with the Overall UK Aegon Coach of the Year award at the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2. We are so pleased to be recognised for bringing tennis to the local community by offering juniors and adults an opportunity to play tennis and keep fit. We will continue to work hard at developing more tennis playing opportunities in Lewisham and look forward to seeing you soon.

We work very closely with Give it Your Max (www.giveityourmax.org) who are a UK charity, delivering free tennis to local Primary Schools. The aim is to increase the profile of tennis in Lewisham and give children an opportunity to play who normally wouldnt have access to the sport. Local Primary schools who have benefitted so far from this initiative are Gordonbrock, Beecroft Garden, John Stainer, Mary Magdalenes, Rushey Green, Myatt Garden, Holbeach, St Saviours, Prendergast Vale, Tidemill, Prendergast Ladywell and Brindishe Green. Over 1000 Primary school children have received free tennis lessons since we started in 2014.
