Boys & Girls: 54th Astrid Bowl Charleroi, Belgian International Junior Championships, clay - Grade 1 (Week 22)

This is traditionally the last G1 tournament before Roland Garros. However none of our three in the main draw will be playing in Paris, barring an avalanche of withdrawals.  Live scores are at http://scores.tennisticker.de/bel/sb.html?tournid=3810 and there may be some streaming at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7WN6ObFVpwQFC50fXNAt8w

Boys R1 (L48)

Anton Matusevich v (WC) Chris Rodesch (LUX)

Natan Rodrigues (BRA) v Harry Wendelken

Girls R1 (L48)

Amelia Bissett v Melis Yasar (SWE)

Harry starts with a win - 64 62 In qualifying Holly Staff reached the final round, but had the misfortune to be in the same section as the top seed, who would have easily made the main draw cut had she entered, and unsurprisingly lost.

We are pretty spoilt in this 2001 cohort, both Anton and Harry are still 16 (Anton only until Tuesday but Harry until Dec) so like George and Jack they still have another year as juniors.

Really it would be good to see their junior ranking compromised a bit by playing 15Ks, both are on that going pro v College (really top power conference programne)

Yes, and Jake F is in the top 100 too, higher than Anton and Harry. With Blu and Connor not far behind.

Jake and Connor, in fact, seem to have enjoyed playing adults and have had some good success (with their doubles rankings and decent singles matches), with that great run at Glasgow challengers.

Am definitely hoping the lads will be playing some of the qualis during the grass season.

Millie has struggled to make any impact so far in G1/G2 events and that continued today. Harry takes on the fifth seed, who has won 3 G2s so far this year.

Boys R2

Anton Matusevich v (13) Igor Gimenez (BRA)
(5) Arnaud Bovy (BEL) v Harry Wendelken

Girls R1 (L48)

Melis Yasar (SWE) d. Amelia Bissett 6-2 6-3

From what I've seen that is probably fair for Millie. G3 & G4 is her level at the moment. She is young and very slight and will improve. I'm not sure she is ready to mix it with the best 16-18 yr old just yet.

Not sure why she is sticking to this grade 2's and 1's then. Better to mix it up a bit.

Great week for Anton.
