Week 21 - Challenger (€85,000) - Loughborough Trophy, Loughborough, Great Britain (indoor hard)

Mind you, Luke is a local lad it turns out, so given all I have said on wildcards elsewhere, I probably should support them doing this. Take it all back

Not surprised Dan hasn't got a MDWC here to be honest. Just because they'll be saving them for him for the grass season.

Presumably he will play Qualies though?

I am not sure about Luke - is he still a single player and is he therefore the best we can put forward? What about Loffhagen or McHugh, or one of the younger guys?

And Ed Corrie is hardly a) young and b) lost to Dan first up in Glasgow so hardly inspires confidence he  has justified this.

Disappointed but lets hope Dan gets through qualies again

I  was at the Glasgow Challenger for four days I saw Ed playing Dan. Dan closed it out in second set tie break but Ed could easily have gone on to win the match as Dan's level dropped. Ward and Glasspool had WC'S for Glasgow I thought Glasspool played really well in first round big serving and beat the seeded player. Second round he was 4-2 up on Olaso but faded after the Spaniard read his serve. I think the LTA have struggled with the WCS in these tournaments shows the lack of depth in British Tennis. Should have given Aiden McHugh and Loffhagen both WCS would have done no harm in  my opinion.

Think Billy Harris is up in Loughborough, assume hell be signing into Qualies.

Yes.

Thanks Wolf.  I guess there will be a lot of undergraduate Phys Ed students, sitting there watching in their "African Violet" tracksuits (don't call them purple!!). Pity I am not in the UK or I dust off my old tracksuit and join them.  Yes.  Loughborough Uni is Bob's old stomping ground.  There was no tennis centre there then of course. In fact, it was so long ago, there wasn't much there at all. disbelief

Hope I'm not being too pessimistic but it's hard to see past 3 or max 4 getting into round 2( and 2 of those from domestic matches), and probably Dan as only qualifier. He will play Sam Barry again if he beats Billy. The draw is a full 32 this time so let's hope he's worked on his fitness somewhat since Glasgow.

So, the bookies have Jack Draper, age 15, and UNR, as practically evens against Kern, top-400.

Again, I may well be wrong (was so last time) but that still seems ultra generous to young Jack.

I note the lack (again) of Ryan Storrie, I hope he's OK.

No Jonny Gray either?

Add: My 50p bet seems to have crashed the odds ! Robin now a clearer favourite and so better odds for Jack-fans smile

In terms of upsets, Tiran v Josh Paris has the potential to be one. I think Simon Carr is overranked at the moment too although he'd still be the favourite against Josh Rose. Pete Bothwell is very playable too. If Neil is on song he has a chance. I could also go for Luke J and that would clear out all three Irishmen ! Good luck to the others too.

In terms of upsets ......

Billy to beat Dan in three

Such a shame that they have drawn each other in QR1, but when there are so many GB players in the draw, these things happen.

Yep. The market seems to be overly pessimistic  about Billy 's chances.

There was never a chance of that happening Bob to be fair. And ITF v ATP player. Almost a different sport at those levels.
