Juniors playing professional senior tennis 2018

Tunisia in the first round and the higher ranked player!

L32: Aidan McHugh WR 1004 (= CH) vs Aleksei Khomic (BLR) WR 1179 (CH = 1130 last week)

And an excellent first round win for George in Uganda. As mentioned early Tyler is a more than decent college player who dominated his conference as a senior admittedly not a power conference but still no mug! At thats a spanking.

L32: (SE) George Loffhagen UNR defeated (5) Tyler Lu (USA) WR 948 by 1 & 2

Not such good news in Israel but against an experienced player.

R32: Nell MILLER (GBR) UNR 18yrs (JCH:185 Jan 17) lost to Elena-Teodora CADAR (ROU) [7] 859 (CH:346 Oct 14) 2-6 4-6

Implementing the guidance about eligibility, I think this then is the tally of GB eligible female juniors to have thus far competed in professional matches in 2018, and their records.
Which just happens to coincide with their 100th such match this year:

Players such as Ms. Garshong, Swan, Appleton, have been excluded per the cutoff: DOB >= 01/01/2000

The following junior eligible players played at least one professional match in 2017, but, for whatever reason, have not yet played such a match in the current year-to-date:

Although it's 'only' doubles, well done to Ola Pitak on getting the R1 dubs win with her sister.

George now faces Niklas (19) who managed to come through qualifying last week and then win a first round match but no strong junior pedigree and got beaten by Finn Bass in final qualis a few weeks back in Sharm

L16: (SE) George Loffhagen UNR vs (Q) Niklas Johansson (SWE) Wr 1509 (CH = 1351 Nov 17)

Aidan has started well in Tunisia and is 4-0 up in the first set.

Fran playing the Sweedish futures event is first on court 6

Well things are going well so far for our juniors with a JCH of less than 50 in transition QF berths all round. Aidan in particular making short work of the mo 5 seed is very impressive.

R2: JONES, Francesca (GBR) 4 583 def INTERT, Amelie (GER) 902 6-2 6-3

QF: JONES, Francesca (GBR) 4 583 [17yo JCH=31] v HELGESSON, Molly (SWE) 1017 CH=978 30/4/18 [18yo JCH=443]

In Tunisia

Aidan loses out to the No 2 seed and a top 500 player.

QF: (2) Andrés Artuñedo (ESP) WR 433 defeated Aidan McHugh WR 1004 by 3 & 1

Better news in Sweden as Fran does hang around in doling out some bakery products. Things begin to get a bit more interesting in the semis, 26 year old Irina has won a couple of 15Ks this year. However to put things in perspective if she were 17 she still wouldnt be in the top 20 girls not yet 18. Yet Aidan at 1004 sits comfortably in the top 10

QF: JONES, Francesca (GBR) 4 583 def HELGESSON, Molly (SWE) 1017 6-1 6-0

SF: JONES, Francesca (GBR) 4 583 v RAMIALISON, Irina (FRA) 2 534 CH=243 10/11/14

Fran is 17, not 18 until September, and is showing at live ranked #20 under 18

I dont doubt she will make some headway into the top twenty by September, it was more about the relatively early impact that the girls have on the WTA compared to the boys impact on the ATP rankings and dont catch up until the not yet 22 cohort.

Aidan is actually slightly older than Fran, turning 18 in July. Just the impression seemed otherwise with the "if she were 17" when she is 17.

But yes Aidan is relatively higher in his scale than Fran ( top 10 as against #20 ) on quite a bit lower rankings ( as you say the girls impact the senior rankings significantly earlier than the boys ). Fran has a couple extra months to move up her U18 scale.

Though one could argue Fran and her peers have a greater body of work for possibly truer comparisons to each other against the much more limited exposure of boys U18s to senior ITFs so generally comparing many fewer tournaments and points than the girls. George L for instance will also be top 10 U18 from two Uganda counters though to be fair some pretty decent ranking wins. Fran and her peers are generally comparing lots of counters and have more completely left junior tournaments behind even if still eligible. The boys relative positions to each other will to me be much more interesting as U19s and U20s, when more have had some time playing and impacting seniors, encouraging as it is to have a very good U18 position which I am as likely to quote as anyone.

Anyway, enough of the semantics for now, they are both doing very well.

A fairly routine QF win, George held serve through out and now up against the Italian he beat in last weeks QF

QF: (SE) George Loffhagen UNR defeated Darko Bojanovic WR 1132 6-2 7-5

SF: (SE) George Loffhagen UNR vs (2) Fabrizio Ornago (ITA) WR 432 (CH = 423 last December) presently delayed tied 1 set all, George coming back after loosing the first set to take the second

In Sweden a big step up in level of competition in the SF up against a 26 year old who broke into the top 250 as a 22 year old proves a step too far. Worth reflecting on her JCH of 134 at 18 compared to Fran. Fran probably needs to play this level of opponent more often to develop, no hurry and I am sure that will come with time.

SF: JONES, Francesca (GBR) 4 583 lost to RAMIALISON, Irina (FRA) 2 534 CH=243 10/11/14 4-6 3-6

WEEK 20

Emma is in qualifying in Israel, hopefully she will be able to build on her trip to China at the end of March beginning of April. It included a run through qualifying to the QF retiring in the second set after loosing a tie break to the world number 327 Xiaodi You and a victory over 19 yr old Wushuang Zheng who has a CH of 555.

QR1: Emma RADUCANU (GBR) UNR 15yrs (JCH:45 April 18) vs BYE

FQR: Emma RADUCANU (GBR) UNR v. Jane STEWART (USA) UNR

Jane Stuart is a college player graduated from Cornell in 2016 where she played in the no 6 slot. Won some lost some. There are quite a lot of Ivy League graduates playing these lower level futures tournaments. ? More about opportunity than realistic aspiration perhaps we will see.

George is also in the MD in Uganda again.

L32: (4) Shalva Dzhanashia (RUS) WR 636 v SE George Loffhagen UNR
