Fed Cup 2018 World Group II Play-Off - Japan v Great Britain - 21-22 April

This is as big a deal as it gets for GB Fed Cup events, and mid tie there is everything to play for, but it doesn't feel exciting. Am not feeling any buzz around this event.

It's not like the anticipation that accompanies a GB mens tie. I recognise I'm biased, I'm a guy and I find mens tennis more engaging. But it just feels more flat as an event. I don't sense it's captured the imagination.

I feel like there exists in the tennis following public more excitement and interest for Cam Norrie than there is for Jo, Hev and Gabbi combined.

I'm sure you'd feel different if it was a home tie, with the support that goes with it and TV coverage. And of course the time difference.

I know what you mean , but there are a few reasons. The 5am and 4am starts are obviously not great, most would be still asleep this morning when Konta was on match point. It's not on BBC TV. It is online and obviously BT, but had it had a pimp slot of say 2pm-4pm on BBC1 or 2 then there would automatically have been more interest. Also, the Davis Cup is universally more popular anyway and the women have done nothing significant in it since the early 90's, certainly no Murray type heroics of 2015. The lack of home tie in that period is a huge factor as well.

I think this is a bit of a reach. 7 million people watched Konta's Wimbledon quarter final against Halep, more than the amount who watched the Mens' final. Outside of a few hardcore tennis fans (aka us) I can't imagine Norrie is particularly well known, even amongst casual tennis fans.

Agreed. Also, Cam has about 6k followers on Twitter, Heather alone about 175k  so fair to say the general public have yet to cotton on to Cam. The problem is with the structure and format of the tournament. Its in desperate need of reform. Personally Id like to see a combined tournament, the Hopman Cup is fun to watch, but thats another topic I guess!

Osaka in full flow in Set 2 all of a sudden, clean striking taking Jo's time away; 2 BP for Jo to save *15-40
Big second serve saves the first, Big first serve saves the second. Deuce.
Holds: did very well to stand firm there
6-2 3-2*

It's fun to see the unfailingly polite Japanese crowd trying to fashion their best imitation of a hostile Fed Cup atmosphere

They're bludgeoning the ball back and forward between them, playing very similar, brutal no nonsense tennis. It's high quality stuff.
40-30*
Osaka has a put away to save the BP, but misses down the line , and Jo has the second set break
6-2 *4-2

Rally down the middle, Osaka clips the top of the tape, slows the ball up, Jo moves to mid court and puts away, *15-0
Ace , *30-0
Big serve, amazing clean winner from Osaka DTL, right into the corner, *30-15
Big serve had Osaka under pressure, Jo moved her back and forward and drew the error, *40-15
2 MP!!!

Osaka goes back behind Jo, but Jo still had a difficult chance, but netted, *40-30
2nd serve, big, Osaka return cips the tape heavy ball posp up short, Jo moves in, and kills!!!

6-3 6-3

Jo was fantastic. Her intensity was immense, and under lots of pressure, she just stepped up.
