Boys & Girls: Australian Open, hard - Grade A (Weeks 3/4)

Qualifying for the Australian Open began today, with Emile Hudd the only British participant, easily accounting for a wildcard. He faces a tough match against a Dutch player who qualified and won a round last year in order to qualify for the main draw. Aidan McHugh, George Loffhagen, jack Draper (if recovered), Ali Collins and Gemma Heath should be in the main draw.

Emile is first on at 10.30pm tonight with live scoring at http://scores.tennisticker.de/aus/sb.html?tournid=3584

FQR

(q2) Jesper De Jong (NED) v (q16) Emile Hudd

The boys and girls singles draws are out. Draper, Loffhagen and McHugh in the boys. Heath and Collins in the girls, both having drawn seeds in round one.

Although the girls face seeds, they are not the worst seeds to face. Both lost easily in round 1 of the Traralgon tournament, and Ali beat her opponent at Roehampton. Jack takes on the precocious Czech who is the top ranked 2002. Only Gemma plays tonight

Boys R1 (L64)

Jack Draper v Dalibor Svrcina (CZE)
Aidan McHugh v Filip Cristian Jianu (ROU)
(Q) Philip Henning (RSA) v George Loffhagen

Girls R1 (L64)

Gemma Heath v (5) Naho Sato (JPN)
Ali Collins v (16) Kamilla Rakhimova (RUS)

Jack is only not a 2002 by a matter of 9 days!

To be fair to Dalibor he is a very youthful 2002 being born in October

I dont follow Junior tennis at all, but just looking through the draws, noticed ALL of the GB players are playing doubles with a non GB partner. Is that normal in the junior game, or dont our players get on at all from a personality perspective? Would be nice to see some partnerships forming - noticed other countries juniors are often playing together.

Anyone with insight i would be interested to see the background , if there is any?

They tend to play doubles with players they train with. I don't think any of the boys train together and the girls definitely don't

Yes, probably indeed more chance if our best trained with our best. Anyone ever thought of some sort of National Tennis Centre ?

There is also the issue of how well particular combinations work. Aidan has played two ITFs with George in the last year, and they haven't won a match, whereas the two occasions he has played with Timofey Skatov they have won a couple of matches both times - and that is who he plays with in this tournament. Gemma has won two G2s with her Moroccan partner.

Boys Doubles R1 (L32)

(1) Baez/Seyboth Wild (ARG/BRA) v Draper/Droguet (GBR/FRA)
Ajdukovic/Miladinovic (CRO/SRB) v (4) Skatov/McHugh (RUS/GBR)
Marek/Tseng (POL/TPE) v Bosancic/Loffhagen (AUS/GBR)

Girls Doubles R1 (L32)

El Jardi/Heath (MAR/GBR) v (6) Topalova/Vismane (BUL/LAT)
Collins/Rogozinska Dzik (GBR/POL) v (WC) Da Silva Fick / Popovic (AUS)

I think that Jack and George L spend a fair amount of time training together; they're often at the NTC for various reasons, I believe.

But personally, I prefer the British players to play with non-Brits.

A lot of our youngsters learn their tennis in a very small bubble, it's very restricted, and restricting.

I feel the more they see of other players, and their coaches, and their set-ups, the better.
