RE: Week 42 - Challenger ($50,000+H) - Las Vegas NV, USA (hard)

Still a great week for Liam.  Kozlov should have won much more easily than he did, but kept throwing in UEs after breaking Liam.   Liam would have had no chance in a TB, he cramped up totally in the last coupl eof points.  He has a week to rest and recuperate!

What a shame for Liam . But he had to do a lot more running around it seemed than Koslov did and in the end it took it!s toll.

Yes was suddenly just rolling in his serve which seemed to flumox Kozlov at 15-30* but just a temporary reprieve.

Pity. But great week and pity he couldn't have fought healthily to the very end whatever that end was to be.

When this week started, Liam had just 47 points to defend up until the end of April next year. He has already done that in just this week. If he can maintain this momentum he seems to have right now over the next 6 months, he has a real chance to seriously boost his ranking.

Excellent week only watched the third set but Liam looked cream crackered. He obviously had a plan for this year and I am very pleased to see he has been able to deliver.

I am sure he had targeted this west coast challenger swing as a high points yielding opportunity as this is where he has been most successful before which obviously gives one confidence. I presume he will play a few more and then shut down for a couple of weeks on the Costa del Stockport, the question is will he be trying to (get on the) kiss cam in the Manchester arena prior to going out to Australia.

It is fantastic Liam has such a bank of points he can now plan the whole of next year with some confidence knowing he will get in on rank, it will be very interesting to see how he plans out the itinerary between the Australian and the French, will it be strategic around optimising points? Developing his game? Does he have aspirations for the clay season? Or will he purely selecting the biggest tournaments he can get into on rank and bank the cash?

Tbh he looked like he was tiring a bit from the middle of the second set. The zip and penetration of his shots just dipped a little. If hed been able to keep up the intensity of the first set, I think he'd have brought it across the line.

But he did really well, especially having to play three Americans row on home turf, with home crowd advantage. I wonder if our doubles guys went out to watch him because there was actually some support for him in this match.

Great week and really something to build on.

Liam moves up 27 places in this week's rankings to N° 169, just nine places shy of his CH.

I cant see him playing right through November. Traditionally British tour players all things bein equal would want to shut down for a bit for some R and R and then a preseason training block, which would give him 2 or 3 weeks. Its a long season to prepare for and best to start with a solid preseason after a period of rest, as far as the long term goes whether he starts in the main draw or qualifying I dont think is that important.

Obviously Cams perspective of the importance of the Australian Open might be slightly different having grown up in New Zealand, but I cant see any other natural hiatus in which to fit such a break.

How about after the Australian Open and Davis Cup match vs Spain? What's traditional for British tour players need not be for Cam. He effectively had a big gap after January this year through to the grass season so at least started his core pro season very late on. Although what college commitments might have taken out of him comparatively I have no idea.

I think it is a biggie to get direct entry into the Australian Open draw and certainly well ahead of any supposed qualifying development, and I can certainly see him playing right through November if necessary.

He is already well set up pointswise regarding the French Open ( less important no doubt to him anyway ) and Wimbledon ( which he would no doubt get a MD WC for if needed though hopefully not ). And clearly even more so if he has added more points before the end of the year.

Of course, getting the job done in the next couple of US Challengers would be the ideal.

Agreed Cam may have a completely different mindset in terms of the competitions he sees as most important to him. Last year I think a major focus for him was bringing back the NCAA team tittle to Fort Worth for TCU, so not really a rest or gap. This year that pressure has gone, replaced by team Tennis at another level! It will be interesting to see how he plans things undoubtedly the DC match up with Spain will be a major part of it.
