Week 41 - ITF ($25K) - Sumter, SC - USA - Hard

QR1: (q13) Emily Appleton (GBR) WR 874 v Jade Lewis (NZL) WR 1063

Added: QR1: Laura Deigman (GBR) WR 998 v Anna Baranovski (USA) UNR (age 16)

Jade is a player I follow a little because she played a lot in France as a junior. (She's born Dec. 1998).

And the biggest news recently I read about her was that she's been selected by the Seed Foundation - a NZ private association that funds select elite players - and is promised about $500k in funding in the next 3 years

500 ! I kid you not, see:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/tennis/95215341/jade-lewis-gets-financial-boost-from-seed-foundation

Also, worth reading the article because they say that Cameron is the one 'who got away'.....Yep, read it and weep

Frankly, I feel they may come away disappointed. And I note that her uncle is 'no longer' on the selection committee (although Dad is pretty big in NZ tennis.....)

Well, I hope that didn't put too much of a dampner on Seed Foundations half-million investment but....:

QR1: (q13) Emily Appleton (GBR) WR 874 def. Jade Lewis (NZL) WR 1063 6-0 6-0

As said, it's not a trade that I'd have taken on.....

Not the same success for Laura though:

QR1: Laura Deigman (GBR) WR 998 lost to Anna Baranovski (USA) UNR (age 16) 6-1 6-3

That is NZ dollars, currently exchange rate is $1=£0.54

But that's still around £90k a year

Thanks, the addict - obvious now you mention it but I see a dollar sign and think yankee... :(

Mind you, as you say, still a lot of money .....

Emily is starting her match now, but I see that there is an interesting GBR doubles pairing due on court later today - Tara and Daneika Borthwick smile

Very good, as Ms. Appleton takes a set off Whoriskey (who is very useful), and we move into the final set, 2-6 6-3

That's a cracking win. A first top 500 win for Emily. Well Done

The easy with which Emily beat Jade Lewis I think shows that from a Tennis perspective she has probably made the correct decision to give US College a miss. On the mens side there is the issue of ongoing physical maturation less so with the women. Jade was a top 20 college player last year playing No 1 in the strongest tennis conference. Dishing out a couple of bagels just shows the gulf between all but the very best 2 or 3 college players and the level on the futures tour.

In the main draw, Emily will play the worlds richest tennis player, Jessica Pegula.
Tara gets Anna Tatishvili.
