Week 26 - Wimbledon men's qualifying

Although every one of the guys was up against it rankings wise this is their cup final so 4 through is the usual each year at QR1. Let's see if Marcus or Liam can make it through overall. For Alex the extra money and matches are more important to get him back and for Jay it's experience so from an overall perspective of we only were allowed one Marcus or Liam.

Reading the beeb, you'd think it was only Marcus that had won today. No mention of the rest. For me Marcus shouldn't get all that attention after pretty much wasting a year.

So the 'four-ers' came good !

In fact, if you think about it, we had nine players, none of whom were supposed to be there (on ranking).

And we got four wins, one loss in three sets (with plenty of chances to win it in two), one loss in two but in a good quality, tight game against a player 900 places better ranked, one loss in two that was a decent, honest effort, one loss that doesn't count as the guy couldn't play and retired, and only one player who played poorly and lost easily.

Frankly, that's a result! (And shows the glory of wildcards)

It was a great day there (and queues were 5 mins, max).

I was so impressed with how Jay conducted himself. He was the better player on grass and thoroughly deserved to win. But it's not easy to close it out and there were a few sticky, anxious moments in the second set - and he kept really calm and focused. He could well have got flustered. Bravo that young man.

Liam's was not dissimilar. He deserved to win, he played well, but there were moments in the second where you got worried (when the Canadian broke back, for instance, and Liam's little face dropped a bit). Bravo to him. Overall he made it look easy. And Frank was not impressed....

Didn't see much of Marcus, just the final four games. (And my lack of faith was completely unwarranted). Obviously it was on livestream, so people will have seen it. But he really rises to the occasion. And there was a real party atmosphere in the crowd. SO unlike the Bank of England club....... He should get a medal for that alone.

And blessings be on Alex - what a win. For someone who's suffered such horrid repeat injuries. And it wasn't easy. Alex doesn't really have much variation. Doesn't slice much. Doesn't come in. Awful drop shots. He just hits hard and then harder and then harder still. He was making most of the running. But obviously was going for the lines as otherwise the ball would come back and it's hard not to make a ton of errors. But he started finding some of those lines. And stuck to it. And battled SO hard. It was a great win. (So good to see a few of the 50:50 linecalls going our way too)

Ryan lost but played a very good game in a quality match. He hit winners, some glorious ones, defended well, surprised Halys, in fact got Halys and his team just a tad agitated. But you always thought Halys would just have enough to come through (his serve, with his height, that kicked up on Ryan's backhand was very effective). Ryan should be pleased, though, when he looks back; he's made a lot of progress.

Neil looked injured really from the get go. And didn't hang around for long after the trainer. I think he knew.....I don't blame him - he'd earned his pay cheque from the qualifiers, time to collect.

Dan Cox put in an honest effort, very workmanlike. He played pretty well. But the other guy played better. Eden Silva was watching, though, and it was a good lesson (I thought) in a coach showing how to put in a shift and try to make something happen, even when you're outclassed.

Lloyd's match was a real disappointment. In fact, that's the third time I've seen him play now and the third time I've been disappointed. (He was far better in the doubles). Just a bit lazy and 'absent', really.

I know he's not going to do it, and there are family considerations etc., but Ed should change coach. It was a terrible collapse. And he was not injured at all. There was simply one very close game in the second that Ed should have/could have won - and he didn't. And then he collapsed. And everything went into hyper negative mode - 'I can't even hit the ball', 'I don't believe I'm going to make the next ball' etc. etc. His brother is very vocal when things are going well - lots of 'well done's , and 'very good's - rather like a school teacher. But had absolutely nothing to say when Ed started falling apart. Now, bottom line, it's up to Ed, of course. But a different approach was called for.

However, net net, four wins was great. And there were other super matches going on too - Hemery winning 13-11 in the third, the young Greek Tsits., de Minaur, Bolelli v Groth, Soeda's epic battle, and more.....

Coup, did you notice any difference in the atmosphere etc with it being ticketed this year? I've never been but some of the courts looked quite empty then again there is a lot of them I suppose.

I don't think the atmosphere was much different for most of the day.. I did think there was slightly less people. But as you say, there's a lot of courts and space for people to spread out.
However, there was definitely a lack of people, compared to previously, in late afternoon, when school finished. And that changed the atmosphere.
You used to get a LOT of kids turning up, with (generally) their mums, a real influx about four o,clock-ish, spending a couple of hours, watching a bit of tennis and then going home for tea. Or staying longer with sandwiches. It was nice. Very friendly.
But there were hardly any kids now. Doesn't really work with tickets.

Thanks for the tremendous reports CD, but you are making me jealous as hell. Just wish I could have made it back there again this year.
