Kyle Edmund

Appropriate for someone whom a Shapovalov fan was speaking of on Twitter as an 'étoile montant'. Certainly suggests many people see his potential!

He is in good company at least.

Well I suppose it's better than a "botte montant" which appears to be the fashion item sported by most of the seeds, in fact anyone given a chance of winning it this year.

I felt this would happen earlier but throughly enjoying seeing all these guys we have seen rising through the ranks beginning to give the old guard a real run for their money, change was inevitable it's just that that went before was so good that acceptance for many is difficult. Paradoxically the Rodge Rafa Aussie open final was the start, Novaks dominance being the peak of what has been a fabulous last decade for men's tennis. Now it's just time to embrace something different.

It's certainly different and very interesting for that.

The real question is how will things continue in 2018 if and when for one thing the injured top players come back fit and well. I wouldn't necessarily be writing off the old guard yet. Yes Roger and Rafa have looked vulnerable and Andy, Novak and Slam Stan have had troubled years but none of the 'big 4' or Stan have so far lost a match at this year's US Open. The real big change will come for sure but this US Open may be more an early outlier and we still have to see with interest how it pans out beyond R2.

And for Kyle an opportunity to seize. Hopefully he will get many more good Slam opportunitues but as the younger players continue to progress this actually might be one of his best. 18 yo Shapovalov ( I suspect much preferable to a 20 yo Shapavalov or whatever ) and either Carreno Busta or Mahut for a place in a Slam QF.

Well, "I'm still young and developing" won't really work as a line if gallant defeat to Shapovalov. Go for it mate, right here, right now !

5 sets great preparation for Rodge, just what he needs. Believe it the youngsters are coming, and is loosing to Shapovalov a disaster,? Teenagers who make the sort of progress he has made tend to be quite good, now and very very good in the future.

Kyle has had an excellent tournament so far let's enjoy it.

Of course I'm not saying that losing to Shapovalov would be a disaster in itself. I've kinda picked up that Denis is rather good, he may in time be great, and he is slight favourite with the bookies for this match. And it has been a very good tournament already for Kyle.

What I am saying is that with other developments this US Open has become a huge opportunity for Kyle and it would be great if he could take advantage and turn that very good tournament into a great one. Opportunity might not so knock again for a little while at least.

For as much as one can look for reasonably linear development, increased opportunity is very unlikely to come linearly in the other direction for some grand meeting point.

Kyle has a new coach:

Stuart Fraser on twitter: Kyle Edmund hires Swede Fredrik Rosengren (formerly worked with Magnus Norman and Robin Soderling) as his new coach

Interesting, Fredrik is quite highly respected in Sweden, will be interesting to see how they go. I think he also propelled Jarkko Nieminen to top 100 stardom too.  Was he not working with Ymer recently?

Personally I would have liked to see a more blockbuster name for Kyle.

Soderling is working with Ymer at the moment.

Eh, I don't think Kyle is a"blockbuster" kinda guy personally.

If you get an effective name fair enough. But effective is clearly the #1 and someone that Kyle feels will fit well with him and help him to progress. It's good to hear that the guy is quite highly respected and that he has worked with such good players. Hope it works out and he can push on in the next year of so. Rusedski was a kind of name, maybe rather imposed on Kyle, and that could have gone much better.

Thanks, Vandenburg,, for the information. Given that Norman has been both a fine player and a fine coach, that sounds encouraging.
Wonder what Norman himself will do now that he's no longer coaching Wawrinka. Ymer a candidate?

Very interesting insight in an interview with Mike Dickson of the Daily Mail

Bang goes my earlier theory re an Evo/Hilts reunion.

Thanks Bob.

Interesting to hear about one of my fairly long held bugbears re his coaches wanting him to be more animated and aggressive on court, and Kyle himself saying that "the more energised I am the better I play" which is kind of one result I suggested - positive body energy transferring to better play. It's simple this stuff, and I was saying it long before it became a bit of a media thing around Wimbledon time. I could pass it on for free    And it has been noted by some that he has indeed been looking to have more presence. There is a nice picture in the article showing a satisfied looking fist pump. He will never change totally and that is not to be expected but good to see him more letting it out and it will be interesting to see how that develops.

I may repeat the losing big closeish matches stuff but that's there for all to see and clearly has frustrated Kyle who from what he says certainly is very interested in his ranking in the here and now and getting big wins now rather than just looking at things as some emotionless ongoing development project to some theoretical peak years. I was glad to hear no repeat of the "I'm still developing" phrase which is of course true to quite a large extent. But you don't want to hear a player saying that too often, maybe almost as a clutch to themselves, and not take advantage of opportunities that come his way as he progresses, especially with quite a batch of very good younger players than Kyle,

I think it's good to hear Mark Hilton is still going to be around. Seems a positive upbeat kind of guy that will be good to have in his corner.

So I certainly took a few positives from that article after a very frustrating day ( mostly for Kyle ! ) today. May it follow through into significant forward progress in 2018.

Yes, Mike's article was very interesting. Kyle has lost an alarming number of matches from a winning position this year (with today's one of the worst examples) but at least he's self-aware enough to know that and to want to take positive steps to turn that around, not to mention good enough to get into those winning positions in the first place.

The flip-side to all those close matches he has lost is that he'd probably already be seeded for slams if he'd won the majority of them, so if he can start winning more of those close matches (which in turn will increase his confidence in those situations), he could step up to the top 20 or so pretty quickly. I'm sure others (indiana, etc) have said this before though!

Agreed but we have always known that Kyle has far more insight into his own game, his weaknesses and his strengths and when to ask for help than we do.

He started playing later than all our other feted players of his generation and at 15/16 I dont necessarily think he would have necessarily been picked as the one. He has an obvious strength in his forehand but physically and athletically he does not necessarily standout what does is his professionalism, dedication and capacity for continued professional development. Those along with resilience are very powerful determinants of future success. Physically he has been much more robust this year which is a major plus and something he will be able to consolidate over the next 2-3 years and of course it takes time to learn how to win, how to manage your thoughts in the clutch. We saw Joanna Konta struggle with this part of her game until she was 25. For me there has been much too much early bleating. We have to be patient the preceding generation had a clutch of the best players Tennis has ever seen, top 20 Tennis for the most part is now the domain of mature athletes.

Throughout his development he has always taken time to beat certain players and it goes through a pattern where he gets closer and closer, personally I see no reason for constantly reiterating the same thing about how tight his losses have been now he is purely playing ATP Tennis. I dont think I am alone in this sentiment or could be considered over confident, its a dollars and dimes business and the real purpose of the article was commercial indeed Nike arent too bothered they are just chuffed to bits to have secured a deal with one of the best young players of his generation.
