Boys & Girls: Roland Garros Junior French Championships, clay - Grade A (Week 23)

Strong line-up in both singles semis. In the boys World number 1 Miomir Kecmanovic takes on the talented Nicola Kuhn (both already around 500 in the ATP rankings) with Aussie 3rd seed Alexei Popyrin meeting Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (14-0 in juniors this year, including a win against Barnaby in a G1 semi). In the girls event Marta Paigina takes on Claire Liu - both around WTA 300 with the American having won back to back 25Ks. In the other semi the youngster CD mentions (who beat Emily in the Banana Bowl final) takes on recent Italian GA champion Elena Rybakina

The singles finals are Kuhn v Popyrin (the Spaniard edged a third set tiebreak against the top seed) and an all-American battle between Liu and Osuigwe (last US girls winner here was Jennifer Capriati). Claire demolished the previously impressive Marta Paigina 2 & 0 and has won 18 matches in a row (Pro + Juniors) since losing to Madison Brengle.

And the winner of the boys final was Alexei Popyrin, in straight sets.

I was so sorry that Ms Jones and her partner lost - would have loved her to have had a trophy of some sort from RG, and she came so close! But an excellent tournament, worth many congratulations.

Alexei Popyrin is a very tall Aussie, keeping up the nation's strong record of producing Junior Grand Slam champions in recent years (albeit not in Paris - 49 years since an Aussie won here). Let's hope he doesn't follow the same route as the last Aussie GS champion (Oliver Anderson)

To my surprise the all American clash went the way of the younger Whitney Osuigwe, despite the more experienced Liu having won their previous clash at a canter. Osuigwe won 6-4 6-7(5) 6-3

So the Australian Open and Roland Garros juniors were both won by girls born in 2002.

Whitney, just turned 15, is another of those players who support my 'invest in the industry rather than the player and the players will take care of themselves' philosophy.

Her father is a full-time coach at the IMG academy at Bradenton. And I liked his quote about not concentrating too much on results, just do the right training and the results will happen. I think the Nigerian federation are making noises about trying to poach her, and Mmoh, but I think they have no chance.

Well done, to her.

Lots of very good youngsters for such as Emma Radacanu ( November 2002 ) and Holly Fischer ( March 2003 ) to aspire to.

Next year ....
