Boys & Girls: Roland Garros Junior French Championships, clay - Grade A (Week 23)

Just Emily Appleton and Francesca Jones have made the main draw here. Barnaby Smith is in qualifying and needs to win two matches, starting with a French wildcard. The other seed in his section is the Italian who edged him out in the Florence G2 semis recently

Boys QR1

(8) Barnaby Smith v (WC) Emmanuel Coste (FRA)

Barnaby does indeed get a rematch with Francesco Forti, who had an equally convincing win today. Barnaby's final qualifier is first on at 8.30am BST with live scores available via www.tennisticker.de/fra/sb.html

Boys FQR

(q8) Barnaby Smith v (q13) Francesco Forti (ITA)

Barnaby lost 4-6 in the third set, which is a shame.

Pity but our 1999 born boys are not exactly a vintage crop I am afraid.

Barnaby is our top ranked junior, and does seem the most upwardly mobile of our 1999ers, but he plus Finn Bass and Max Stewart ( our other top 100 junior ranked ) are in their final junior year and as well as none making this Slam MD neither have any of them so far made any real transition to seniors with not a senior ranking point to their names. I fear tough times ahead, but just hope at least one does push through.

At least Aidan McHugh looks a promising 2000 born ( I was pretty impressed with him in the Glasgow 15K ) with the 2001ers looking as if there could be some real players there if they hopefully continue to progress well.

And of course there is a 1998 lad been doing not too bad !

Yes.
Max is off to college in the US, I believe, from what I read on the thread. Which seems a good idea.
Don't know about Barnaby or Finn.
But, as you say, not much to suggest that the 1999-ers are ready to move on to adult tennis yet. Which seems a surprise/disappointment re Finn, in particular, considering all the hype and focus the LTA have put on him. (And I've been a fan, based mainly on one excellent match I saw him play two years back).

I heard Barnaby Smith is going to Texas A & M, Jack Molly - Berkeley California, Max Stewart - Oklahoma. Finn Bass is a late 99er so a school year behind and I guess will go next year. As Finn doesn't have A levels through this month I'm a bit disappointed not to see him in qualifying.

Well good to see all three that are going to college next year are playing in power conferences and undoubtedly will be amongst the strongest freshman recruited. Cal in particular is a top heavy programme (3 seniors out 2 of their top players) and will loose a number of last years squad so opportunity beckons for Jack and Ben Draper. They will undoubtedly have a fantastic time at college but will have to do something really special there to stand a chance of transitioning to pro tennis when they finish good luck to them all.

Thanks for the college information. Finn unfortunately didn't have any chance of playing in qualies - there were 3 alts higher than him who didn't make the draw either
