Wimbledon Wildcards - Women

It's getting to that time of year again. The LTA policy for 2016 is here...

https://www.lta.org.uk/globalassets/play/professional-development/documents/lta-wimbledon-wild-card-recommendation-policy.pdf

They will recommend a maximum of 8 names for MDWCs or QWCs, combined. There is no ranking cut-off. Results over the last 3 months to count for more, especially on grass. Injury excuses and junior results to be taken into consideration.

There are an additional 2 QWs to be won at the QWCs play-offs...

Wimbledon wildcards

Thanks for sharing - seeing the LTA criteria written down makes interesting reading. The Women's wildcard selection this year is probably as unclear as it's ever been, and if anyone could correctly guess who all the wildcards will go to I will be very impressed.

THis is what I'd do - it categorically is not what the LTA will do!

MDWC
Tara
Amanda
Katie S
Katy D
Freya

QWC
Mirabelle
Gabi
Lisa

Personally, if the number was 9, it would be easier, as here, Harriet misses out.

I would give Harriet at least a Q/MDWC to Edgbaston as some compensation.
Emily Arb and Katie B for QWC at Eastbourne/Edgbaston.
Preference for MDWC for other UK ITF's to which they are otherwise unqualified to enter MD or Q, to Harriet, both Emily's, Maia.

As Laura's 'earned' ranking (my criteria for judgemnet) is below all these players, I would have her wait until next year. Amongst (many) other things, she had a completely wasted MDWC at Wimbledon last year offered more on hope that reality. This year would redress that oversight.

I can't imagine anyone will agree with me

ABB - no room for Sam?

This policy is actually more restrictive than previously - in 2015, there were 3MDWCs and 8QWCs =11. This year there will be a maximum of 10.

Presumably they've decided that 2015 MDWCs like Konta and Broady haven't done enough in the interim.

I think you can write in 6 ( MD + Q ) WCs if fit and available : Tara, Katy D, Laura, Freya, Gabi and Katie S. Amanda a seventh if she's up for it, but certainly not seeking any prior prep.

If they do announce 8 pre WC play-offs Brits ( they don't always ) it then gets very difficult. We have Harriet, Lisa, Katie B and in good danger of usurping all, Sam.

Hard choice, but I think Sam would be best served by going through the play off, and would probably make it through.

I'm not sure that there will be a final maximum of 10. The max 8 plus 2 play-off places is pretty much what is said each year. But I think more than just last year, assuming overall places available, the AELTC ( with or without LTA recommendation ) end up giving more than a total of 10 after the play-offs, often finding places for play-off semi finalists.

Yeah the 8 Rule is just in the initial list.

I suspect they may end up announcing less than that. I think Tara and Laura are givens for the MD, and they will probably give Katy S the nod.

I don't think Katy, Freya, Gabi, and even arguably Harriet and Lisa should have to go through pre-qualies. But not clear what the LTA committee will come out with.

Hard to know what Mandy is up to. She could appear in Brum qualies.

Agree with some of your choices But Laura Katie Swan and now I  think Tara will receive MD wild cards   QWC  Freya Lisa Gabi Katy Dunne who I don't think has done enough on the grass so far this year to warrant a MD and last Sam. Harriet has not shown anything so far in the grass season Mandy C I can't see playing any grass tournaments this year so will not receive any WC

International candidates...

Zhuk, 2015 Juniors champ, is ranked in the 600s, but I hope she will get a MDWC. I think she's earned it; and the automatic award makes Wimbledon Juniors the pre-eminent Juniors competition.

Ash Barty is doing nearly as well as Tara.

In s'-Holland, Golubic, Rodina (beaten by Amanda not long back) and Ozaki are winning matches on grass, and stand a chance of ending this week inside the top 100. Similary, Paszek in Notts.

I guess Tara, as RU of Eastbourne, could be a candidate for the "international" MDWC which Riske doesn't want.

Zhuk I think will end up with a qualies one.

Freya has been given a MDWC for Ilkley, probably an indicator she will be given a QWC, given her first round match could in theory not be until Wednesday which, if she won (in a very tough field) would cause her to miss out.

My choices would be (as of now):

MDWC
Tara

QWC
Laura
Katie S
Katy D
Katie B
Freya
Harriet
Lisa/Sam/Emily App/Jodie this is an incredibly difficult choice - whoever shows the best form in the next few weeks I suppose.

I've omitted Gabi from the list because she's been given 2 QWCs the previous 2 years and I'd hope she'd come through the play offs. I wish they could make more QWCs available. cry
I don't think any British player deserves a MDWC apart from Tara. Even then she has been given 2 before and did amazingly well but on both occasions perhaps didn't take her chances and make full use of it, so they might be a bit wary.
Laura definitely doesn't deserve one and at this point it would be just aiding her stagnation.
Katie S has been in poor form all year and has done nothing particularly of note to credit one.
Freya's performance this week shows she's not ready.
I don't see how Mandy could get a QWC never mind a MDWC when she's shown no interest in taking part in the grass season.

I think instead of handing out more MDWCs they should just let the next highest ranked player in as a direct acceptance. Unless Ash Barty and any other international player that hasn't made the MD by rank does anything particularly special, such as winning or being runners up to one of the WTA grass events then they don't deserve one in my opinion.

It is fairly obvious:

MD WC for Tara, Laura R
QWC for 6 from 8 - Freya, Katie S, Katy D, Gabi, Lisa, Katie B, Harriet & Sam

Mandy has not played on grass and thus will not qualify based on recent performances(i.e grass)

Men is similar:

MDWC for James W and Liam

Brydan will stay in qualifying
QWC for Alex W, Lloyd, Ed C

Everyone else will have to go through playoff unless they win a MD match at Ilkley
