Loses 76(6) 76(2)

Lost her break at *54 with two horrific volleys, a woeful lob and a huge double. Tiebreak was a shambles.

Tornado absolutely deserving of the win. Already a more complete, and to be honest, better, player than Naomi Who had her strengths completely neutralised and couldn't hit through, instead racking up a string of errors.

tornado went walkies for a bit but regrouped well. Naomi heads to Quebec where she should be looking to cause damage on the fast indoor surface.

Naomi is defending nothing in September, so whilst this was a missed opportunity (however I agreed with the bookies that Tornado was the favourite) she still has opportunities to move up before Lagos x2 drop off.

Naomi had her chances and she seemed to capitulate a little when facing any sort of success. Certainly a strange one that. One to forget and definitely one to remember for Tornado.

Sounds like really poor reaction to some calls by Naomi. She certainly must know you get them, and sometimes at important times, what often more counts is your reaction. Strange.

Tornado seems a real prospect with clear areas to work on, such as serve. Still was a decent draw and opportunity for Naomi and I'll be surprised if Tornado qualifies.

Reasonable effort by Naomi off a non ideal preparation. Black clearly a prospect but you do wonder how much that serve will hinder her progress.

In the Main Dra, Hev has Sori Cirstea up first (who is in awful form).
Winner to play Govortsova or seventh seed, Genie (who is injured and in pretty poor form too.)

Not bad.

JoKo has a great R1 draw against Shahar Peer.
Winner to play Muguruza (very tough) or a qualifier.

Cirstea clearly is massively better than her current ranking but as you say completely out of form, plus Hev also has her number in the H2H. Genie isn't in form but it is a GS, and she definitely raises her game for the big tournaments, her injury is relatively minor I think.

Nice draw, probably 50/50ish, but the Mug is in top form so I agree would be very tough in 2nd round.

Of the qualifiers, there are:

3 teenagers : Ashleigh Barty (18), Francoise Abanda (17) and Ons Jabeur (19, by 5 days)

2 over-30s : Anastasia Rodionova (32) and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (32)

Average age: 22.9 years

and:

3 Chinese
2 Ukranians
2 Russians
2 Australians

NB A little shout out for Mirjana, known as the centre of horrific stories about abusive fathers, probably the worst I've ever heard, and someone who she did not play at all for virtually four years and did not play a single major in the eight years between 2002 and 2010. Done it all on her own since then. Well done doesn't really cut it but well done all the same.
