James Ward

Currently 4th(?) alternate for the Australian Open. Do you think he'll get in?

Currently 4th but Tipsarevic likely to withdraw.

Touch and go!

Istomin, Stepanek, Bautista-Agut, Monfils & Tsonga - all recovering from injuries. Istomin is a knee injury - pulled out of Paris Masters earlier this year. Tsonga has pulled out of Hopman Cup already....Monfils has dodgy knees and Stepanek has been struggling for some time. Bautista-Agut finished season but was reportedly 'not 100%' at Paris Masters.

Melbourne is a long way to come if you are not 100% fit!

Tipsarevic has pulled out of ATP Chennai after being awarded a WC and is reportedly not back on the tour until Feb 2015 which means Ward will definitely drop to 3rd Alt shortly.

Expecting him to get into MD.

Yes.  This has been tweeted today by Stuart Fraser

Radek Stepanek the latest player to withdraw from the Australian Open due to injury. James Ward now third alternate...

Waiting for Marin Cillic to withdraw - he has pulled out of Brisbane with a shoulder injury.

W/Ds so far:

- Sock
- Haase
- Stepanek
- Tipsarevic

Ward now 2nd ALT. Feeling confident that he will make his first slam draw by right!

Not quite confident yet. It looks possible that Cilic will withdraw but I'm still waiting for a Tsonga or an Istomin to show signs of a withdrawal before believing. I suppose, however, that intense training periods may well prove the downfall of some players.

I'd like to think James will make it. Still plenty of time and he deserves it!

Stu has found a Czech article saying that Rosol is going to withdraw in order to stay with his pregnant girlfriend. If that and all the other withdrawals are confirmed, James will need just one more withdrawal to make it in

I imagine there will now be a long silence over Christmas and the new year to keep us on tenterhooks ...

Looks like Wardy is next one in now.

Rosol could be the one.

Haas, Tipsarevic, Sock and Stepanek withdrawn.

Possibly Rosol shortly.

Therefore I don't understand the conclusion arrived at above?
